Came in last night from CDG connecting to a flight to DCA - immigration/customs was quick and easy, got bags pretty quick, re-checked bags, then got nailed in a 20+ minute(s) line to go thru security to get to the concourse. Sign for Envoy/Dividend Miles but no actual line. Did I miss something? Haven't I been in a security controlled enviroment since CDG? Is this standard at all US airports?

This is standard. Since you have had access to your checked bags you could, in theory, transfer a pocket knife or something else prohibited from them and into your carryon (or your pocket).

It is standard.. but it is terrible at PHL and I would recommend flying through CLT whenever you get the possibility. Whenever we are routed through hell (aka PHL) we head for the Terminal C entrance to security because you avoid the huge lines at A and B.. most of the passengers from the plane go right into the "A" security line, and it can get really long..

We went through PHL on a MBJ-PHL-DCA flight just before New Years. Customs and immigration, at least for US passport holders, was relatively easy. The security line however was nothing short of hell -- and close to a riot. BA, LH and US had all landed from Europe, along with Caribbean flights. I'm certain our wait was well over 1.5 hours in an enclosed downstairs hallway. Elderly having trouble standing, babies crying, flights missed -- one passenger held her boarding pass up and asked aloud if there was anyone in line that had NOT missed their connection. I didn't raise my hand since we were well past 30 minutes from our scheduled departure time. We ran to the gate when through security and they held the doors for us to board and then left -- 45 minutes late (thank goodness) and I heard the steward say they had left more than 10 behind in PHL, and that it happens all the time!!
