This may seem like a trivial question but I'm a UA 1K about to take my first US international flight in 10 years, to Madrid on 1/14 and I'm curious. Does US charge for alcohol in economy?

Yes. From the US Airways website:

In Coach Class, beer, wine, and spirits selections are US$4 on North American and Caribbean flights, and US$4, €4 (EUR), or £3 (GBP) on Transatlantic flights.

I think it went up to $5... at least it was last summer on North American runs.

According to the latest Attaché magazine, it's US$5, €5, or £3.

Thanks for the info. Not that UA is all that generous with the liquor, but it's nice not to have to keep digging into my wallet.

This penny-pinching on drinks is one of the reasons I did not select US as my airline of choice to replace DL when it butchered its elite Medalliion program.

Try US' partners Lufthansa or UA. You will still get your free drinks there.

Capitolhill,
What do you mean that UA isn't cheap with the alcohol. It is free on international flights. I don't think you can get much cheaper than that.

I think the thought is that its not free-flowing. But I think if you ask you shall get your free alcohol, even Heineken http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I've found the licquor on UA International to be quite free flowing. The price is right as well. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Boaboy, this doesn't surprise me. Free flowing alcohol seems to precede you everywhere.

With regards to the United comparisons - It might be worth mentioning that you also pay for headsets as well, so keep those pockets full! I was shocked when I took my first US Airways flight in November and found this out, but they do have a far superior entertainment system I suppose.
