US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Upgrade with Miles - must wait to be cleared into F?

I have 2 tickets booked in coach from PHL-GCM in Feb. I called US to upgrade to F with my miles. After a couple minutes on hold, the agent comes back to tell me that 3 of the 4 legs can be upgraded and that the 4th one hasn't cleared (which is the CLT to GCM, the most important leg). I don't understand why I have to clear. If there's 2 F seats available (and there are by checking ITN), I should get them no matter what my status is (which is silver) because I am using my miles. Correct? Or am I crazy to think this?
BTW, this is an H fare.
I asked when I should call back to see if those seats are available. She said the day before the flight. Grant it, there are only 2 seats that are left on this 4th leg. Please provide me with your insight. I've always been able to upgrade on all of my other flights with miles.

No, upgrades with miles come out of the same bucket as e-upgrades (fare class: E), not F.

Rats! Oh well. Guess I'll just have to shoot for exit rows in coach. Thanks for the quick reply.

I thought that miles upgrades are from Code G?
Also, j_mee, are you saying that there are a fixed amount of upgradeable seats for miles AND e-upgrades (soon to be auto upgrades for all preferreds)? Just one block of upgradeable seats for both? So the only difference is that you have to burn the miles if you want to secure the seat more than 7/3/1 days before the flight?

Upgrades from B/Y come from P
Upgrades from all other coach come from E
I believe it doesn't matter what method is used (miles or e-upgrades). See more info here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum51/HTML/004215.html)

Correct. From what I've experienced, if the mileage upgrade can't be cleared in advance, it will most likely be cleared at the gate, if at all. I'm just wondering if mileage upgrades clear at the gate before 7/3/1 upgrades.

My understanding is that all day of flight upgrades are treated the same, no matter if they are e-upgrades or miles. Therefore, your position in line to secure the upgrade is determined by status and then check-in time within status.
