View Full Version : Allowing images in OMNI?

Does anyone here have a strong opinion for or against enabling images to be posted in the OMNI forums? The moderators appear to be willing to handle any extra workload, and I can't see any disadvantage to allowing images. They seem to have added value in all the other forums.

I wish there were no images in any forum. Despite what the "experts" say, they DO slow down the experience of trying to read threads. I will give up on a thread rather than gnash through all the churning.

Then just turn them off -

"Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)"

I don't see reason not to enable them, but I also don't see any burning need to turn them on either. They can serve a purpose, but I'd rather seem them enabled for all the relevant boards on FT (hotels, airlines).

In OMNI-regular, pics might be helpful for some threads (ie, what is growing in my basement type threads). In OMNI-PR, I would be hard-pressed to see any value to adding photos to a post.

I say nay and :td: as imho, threads in OMNI will end up more full of pictures than content (and for me, it's the content that makes OMNI what it is)

How about activating the polling feature in OMNI to see if there is interest among the members that regularly post there? That should give Talk Board some numbers to work with.

I would prefer to see them added for all forums... again, individuals can turn off the feature if it lessens their experience.

I know they can be very valuable and certainly enhance the FT experience for me.

Every time some 'hot babe' is mentioned, someone will usually post something like 'this thread is useless without pictures' - a link is usually provided for those who don't know who is being discussed or want to ogle her.

I wouldn't actually want that type of picture to be staring me in the face in those threads. For some reason, I don't have a problem with providing links, which I can chose to click on or not, but I do have a problem where I'm kind of hijacked into reading a men's club thread where a woman's appearance becomes the topic of discussion.

And since I'm a mod, I cannot turn off images since we are required to actually check them to see if they follow the TOS, nor would I want to since I like to see travel related images.

Nor do I see any burning need to turn them on for OMNI.

I can agree with this in Omni-lite. There have been times I wanted to post a picture during a home improvement project.

I'm firmly against it in P/R, as I think some no-so-very-nice images would be posted, and it may become too much of judgement call for the mods.

Same with hot guys...would those offend you?!

I say turn them on and let the posters turn them off if they don't want to see them!

Power to the posters! :D

For those saying turn off images... well, that turns them off everywhere, even places like trip reports, where I might want to see those images without having to reset my preferences.

I hadn't thought about the "hot babe" issue, and I wouldn't want to see that regularly pop up in my face unless I ask to see it.

Hence, the content of these images just may cause more trouble than they're worth.

I may be changing my mind on this - even in Omni-lite.

Why should I be forced to turn images off across the entire site, to avoid seeing having hot babes' rammed down my throat in OMNI?

Images of hot women don't offend me. But nor do I want threads about people derailed into discussions about what those people look like just because their image has been posted in the thread. It's a different thing to (to me anyway) to have a link to where one can see someone - and I'll sometimes use those to see if I recognise who is being discussed - than pasting that picture - from who knows where - and of course, our work computers (if we browse at work) automatically try to go to those sites... my firewall doesn't like a number of sites people link to already (the social photo sharing ones principally) lord knows what our IT department will think when my pc is logged as trying to access hot babes monthly.

As for your second question - would I object if it were guys? Not necessarily, but I would understand if other people did object, so I'd be willing to not post pictures of cute guys simply because they were cute/sexy guys.

I think that's an irrational concern. If I want to look at/post photos of hot babes/guys just for the sake of looking at/posting hot babes/guys then an OMNI thread is pretty much the LAST place I'd do that.

But if there is a thread that happens to be about a hot babe, I see no harm in someone posting a photo rather than a link to a photo.

Mostly though the 'this thread is worthless without a photo' threads end up not being about hot people at all. More typically they end up being about mostly-toothless meth addicts doing wacky things. In those cases a photo would certainly put the thread in proper perspective.

In any case, I like the idea of asking OMNI posters what they think of the notion with a poll.

I would think most people can make an educated guess on whether or not there might be an "objectional" photo in a thread by the thread title... but I know that would not be 100% accurate.

If you object to those types of pictures, stay out of the thread.... kinda like how people should stay out of the Survivor/American Idol threads if they have not watched the latest episode... :)

So I should either just turn off images or stay out of any thread talking about any celebrity.

How about instead of doing stuff which modifies my use of FT, we actually don't allow a change of behaviour on FT? @:-)

How about instead of limiting posters options we give posters greater options to either view photos or not at their own discretion using the tools available (both good sense and, if desired, disabling photos).

Photos are allowed on pretty much every forum but OMNI. Now that OMNI is a closed-group I think it ought to be de-ghettoized.

Thought I would point out that there is a poll in both Omni-lite & Omni PR re: this topic, so people might want to vote in the 2 polls (for those who are Omni-enabled).

Cheers.

You might want to consider re-wording that.

Do OMNI threads/posts ever get shifted out of OMNI and onto other parts of FT that are accessible to all FTers?

imhe of other P&R boards, where images are enabled, the quality drops because it enables the empty vessels to make even more noise. instead of a one line "well if you like X so much why don't you go and live in Y?", it becomes a post with fifteen images of terrible things happening in Y (hot babes not among them).

Yes, if discussion is on mile/point/travel/destination, sometimes technology and/or computer. For example, this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-technology/1195086-need-send-laptop-houston-manchester-united-kingdom.html) is now settled in the new home in Travel Technology Forum.

A little bit OTish but there are threads deemed OMNIish but are now closed in whichever fora they land due to OP not OMNI-enabled. Here's one example from CommunityBuzz! Forum (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/communitybuzz/1204308-using-virtual-card-s-free-credit-reports.html).
