I don't swim. I've never been great at it, and it's not something I enjoyed.

Unfortunately it's still winter here and our pool is drained and covered 'til May. Even so, it's too short to swim laps. We do have public pools but I'd have to drive to the next town over.

I need to get in shape to swim :D The health club I pay $$ to that I've been very lax about actually going to has both indoor & outdoor pools, so I really don't have much of an excuse.
One of the things I do like about swimming is it's more gentle on the body & is good cross-training. Plus when I tore my Achilles heel running & was out of commission for a while, the swimming helped w/ recovery.
Cheers.

N830MH -- I agree with you. Swimming is great. We always try to stay in hotels when traveling that have pools so we can swim. It is very relaxing when traveling.

I use pools as often as I can - it's usually the local YMCA but if a town doesn't have one, I use the following site to find public pools:

Yes. To watch my daughter's swim lessons. :D
But since I signed up for an "indoor triathlon" in the fall which has 10 minutes of swimming I suppose I will have to start figuring it out pretty soon.

Yes, I swim anywhere from 4 to 6 times a week, usually 3000 to 4500 yards each time. Generally not just a straight swim, but smaller sets (something like 10 x 100's on a time rather than a 1000).
I swam with teams from 1998 to 2010, but am now out on my own.
Let me know if you have any swimming-related questions (if I don't know the answer I can reach out to find one).

Swimming is my favorite exercise. I like to swim at night when no-one is around. My apartment building keeps the pool heated at 80+ all year long. Today I got close to the pool ;). Sat in a chaise and read a book.

What happened? You didn't have your own house? Why not? You were selling at old house, didn't you?

Me too! I went to my old gym late in the day, around 8-9pm. By that time, the gym was pretty empty, so I could get some cardio/weights, then retire to the pool for a leisurely swim. It was wonderful to have the entire pool to myself at night - the retractable roof would be open during the summer, soft glow of the lights in the water surrounding me. (Though it reminded me of pool scenes from Cocoon...:o:eek:) Then after my swim I'd jump over to the hot tub for a quick soak before heading off to the locker room to read the paper for a bit in the sauna. Ahh - a wonderful way to relax after a busy day of work. :)

Holy crap that's a lot of laps!!
Kudos! :) (I wish I was that productive...the only healthy thing I managed to do this morning is to have a bowl of oatmeal with organic skim milk and no sugar.)

Yes, I agree. I did a lake swim at Saguaro Lake a few weeks ago...a friend has a kayak and paddled, I just had to follow him, did about 3 miles.
Planning to to the Governor's Island Swim (http://nycswim.org/Event/Event.aspx?Event_ID=2108) in September, and possibly the 2012 Liberty Island Swim (http://nycswim.org/Event/Event.aspx?Event_ID=2204) (I've heard this fills very quickly after the NYC swims open, in December of the prior year.)

I started swimming about a year and a half ago in order to do triathlons.
I thought I swam like a rock, but now I love it. Really gets the kinks out, and enables me to move in ways not possible on land.
I swim with our local Masters group - if you are interested in swimming and are not familiar with Masters Swimming (http://www.usms.org/), check it out. Swim training for grownups.

I've been swimming with USMS groups since about April 1997. Took a little break early this year, but I'm back at it.
Signed up for a swim meet, doing my first 1500m (in a 50m pool) ever. I doubled my 800m time from last year, then subtracted 15 seconds for an entry time, all just a guess. On some swimming forums, people speculate that for most swimmers + runners, a time for a 1500 is similar to a 5k running... Guess I'll find out (after I then run a 5k).

Yes and yes.
At the B-meet last Monday I wrote up* approximately 25 DQs on breast stroke alone. At that same meet I also had my second ever freestyle DQ (kid walked to the finish). :o
*One point I always emphasize is that *I* do not DQ anyone. The kids DQ themselves. All I do is write it up. ;)^

Lol, in masters things are a little more laid back. I haven't officially been DQ'd, but I should have been last year. I dove off for a 50m breast, and completely forgot what I was doing and did 6 dolphin kicks off of the dive. Then suddenly I was like, "this is breast..." I switched over, pretty much did easy breast to the finish, expecting a DQ. It never happened.
A coach came up to me after and said, "your pace looked more like a 200. you need to really sprint in a 50." when I told her why, she laughed. I still had a 50 free after that and didn't want to waste the enery/effort only to be DQ'd.
Someone walked to the finish? You mean they got out of the water and walked along the deck? That's one I've never heard of.
There's a couple people I'd love to see get DQ'd...
there's several (many) masters groups in the DC area, and I know a couple of people who swim with groups there. let me know if you're interested and I can connect you. and no, masters doesn't mean you need to be a, "master," of anything, it is just 18+. we have some people in my group who have gone to Olympic trials, and others who may take 2 min to do a 50. I'm somewhere in between.

Oh, they take things QUITE seriously in the NVSL (Northern Virginia Swim League). Despite the fact that we're in division 15, the NVSL audited the officials at our A meet last Saturday. The auditor was supposed to only observe, but during a DQ deck conference he did challenge a DQ I called for a non-continuous backstroke turn. I pulled out the rule book and straightened him out, and then our ref told him that 'observing' was different from 'participating.' :o
In the end he gave us an A. :)
The kid that DQ'd freestyle walked on the bottom of the pool (the finish is at the shallow end).
As for myself, I am a pretty strong swimmer but I do it for fun rather than exercise and/or competition. It's too damn exhausting for me! ;)

Went swimming tonight. I have to seize the moments when the pool isn't filled with kids and pool toys.
I had the pool and entire courtyard to myself. It was damn nice. The pool was warm and once I got in there I wanted to keep going and going. This may have been the first swim since my back surgery and one of the reasons that swimming tonight was so appealing, was that my back muscles felt very tired. All better.^ I'm going to try to do this nightly. My hair will look like crap all the time, but that is why Lululemon designed the great baseball cap for women (with cute little zipper).

I'm sure our kids groups here are quite serious. We swim at the same time and will sometimes do relays against them (the senior group). And some masters folks take things more seriously too.
Glad you pulled off a successful audit! ^
Most of the pools I swim in are 6-8 feet deep, so I can't even stand, I was trying to figure out how someone could walk.
Hmm, if a kid could walk, the water must only be 3-4 feet deep. They do blocks in water that shallow?
You should officiate a masters meet sometime, would be a nice change of pace for you.

Our kids swam in that league, too (York Swimming), until we moved to Colorado! My husband is also a stroke and turn judge. I run the computer :-). Or at least we did until the kids left home.

Both of my Achilles are tight right now & stretching before walking/running isn't that much help, nor stretching in the shower. When I tore my Achilles before, swimming really seemed to help with recovery so I may need to head back to the pool.
