US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - IFC Snack Boxes
On my PIT-LAX flight last night, they announced a $5 "snack box" in addition to the 2 customary sandwich & salad IFC offerings. The snack box consisted of a half a turkey sandwich, a pack of raisins, a small bag of potato chips, a pack of Oreo's and a small bag of goldfish. I decided to try the snack box, and I thought it was quite decent for the money. I've never experienced any of the normal IFC offerings, so I can't make a comparison. There was also a comment card enclosed with the snack box.
I don't recall reading or hearing anything about the option of purchasing a snack box, so I'm curious if anybody else knows anything about it.

Actually, I think this was discussed here a short while back.

That sounds a lot like the old snack box from happier days. Can anybody confirm that?

The "snack boxes" were offered on my PHL-DFW and PHL-PHX legs in the past month or so. The first time I remember hearing them mentioned was sometime in October.
My wife bought one on our PHL-PHX leg (she didn't care for either $10 IFC choice) and sure enough, it has a striking resemblance to the snack box we used to get, way back when, on US - small sandwich, bag of chips, and a cookie or small chocolate.
IMHO, the snack box is a far better value at $5 than the full lunch/dinner box is at $10.
Interesting that they've begun offering it, though -- not as much acceptance of IFC as hoped?

It might be a better deal to buy two of the $5.00 snack boxes instead of the $10.00 meal.

I heard 3 or 4 people near me request the snack box, and only 1 person request a regular IFC meal. According to the FA I spoke to, IFC may not be around much longer. I assumed she meant it was going away entirely, but perhaps she meant it will just morph into "$5 snack boxes or nada."
Out of principle, I won't buy food inflight, not even for 5 dollars (although this seems more reasonable). Instead I always buy slices of pizza in the terminal. I eat it when they start offering the food for money. I always get comments like "I wish I had thought of that," from the person sitting next to me. Even the flight attendents sometimes give me an approving look. I think they hate having to peddle the crap in the boxes.

Funny thing is that $5 snack box sounds a lot better than the crap they give out for free in First Class...
That half turkey wrap is just plain bad, and the salmon salad... well...

I've had the turkey wrap three times this week and the first two times I thought it was excellent ... the third time it seemed like they skimped a little on it, but it was still very tasty, just not quite as filling.
The Salmon salad is a total joke.
After my first trip I wrote US Consumer Affairs and told them this was unacceptable and specifically pointed out that their website information on meals in First Class (which states that FC will receive "standard meals") makes absolutely no sense since what we receive is a scaled down IFC meal. I'd encourage everyone to write Consumer Affairs who feels the new FC meals are not up to par.

That turkey wrap in First may not be great, but I think it's a lot better than any of the dried out (half) sandwiches I'm used to getting. In fact, I wouldn't mind getting the whole sandwich. The other night I was expecting the same cookie that they were giving out with IFC, but got a tiny, dry, awful oatmeal raisin square..why bother..
