EL AL Matmid - Bump on a sold out flight before Passover.
I'm flying Y class LAX-TLV on Apr14th. The flight is almost sold out. Just the Y class is open.
It's a Thursday, arriving Friday afternoon before Passover.
I'm considering a bump on this flight. Any experience as what will be offered & alternate flights (maybe through JFK or EWR)?
Obviously, I want to arrive in TLV on Sunday.
Any info will be appreciated.

When you say you are considering a bump, have you actually been offered one at this early stage???

No. But I'm sure I'll be offered one...

It's worth registering in advance.

How exactly I do that?

Call up ELAL- better in Israel - and they have something called a bumping list for each flight, they have a list for when they need to bump people, they put a note that you have volunteered, so they sometimes contact you even like a day before or so to offer you.

Can someone with more experience than me with LY can think what flights alternatives I can get in my specific scenario? Also I presume I'll get free flight? Thanks for the info.

option 1: if you can make it to JFK to the night flight ly008. i dont know when it departs (it changes ).
option 2: there are no other LY flights until the end of Shabat. so maybe the flight on Saturday from JFK with ELAL
option 3: any flight to europe , either via JFK, and from there at the end of Shabat with Elal. one option that a friend of mine that missed the thursday flight from JFK was given: saturday morning jfk-lhr with AA, and LHR-TLV with ElAl

I'm pretty sure it's a choice of $400 or free flight (valid for 12 months) from North America ($200 or free flight from EU).

Just to compare:
Last week I VDB'd off a Austrian airlines 40 minutes flight (in economy) and took a flight 4 hours later.
I got 250 EURO's in cash....

my friend missed a flight... wasn't bumped.
i once flew with my wife and was offered to give up our BIZ seat and move to economy for a free BIZ round trip ticket each. i refused...

That's because of the european law... Not because they were nice to you...
Any other experiences?
Flight from france to TLV, offered for going from C to Y due to over booking
Free flight in business To europe + 400 Euro
Flight from Italy to TLV, Offered for staying one more day 400 Euro.
Flight from Israel to New York (EWR) offered a free ticket + 250$ + Hotel & Taxi
New York to Israel, Offered a Ticket + 800$
The more they dont find volunteer they higher the compensation goes...
(Just for the record, Never agreed to those offers, Prefer to go home asap
to the family).

They generally offer a morning flight as the night flights fill up first. That's what they do from JFK.
No. But I'm sure I'll be offered one...
Ehud, I'm not so sure at all, I very much suspect that you're in for a dissapointment, your flight is only 2 days away and there seems to be plenty avalibale seats.
Keep us updtaed how it went anyhow.

I was on that flight.........
I was flying D class and when i arrived to lax from Sfo i saw a big
sign asking for valuntires ( or how you spell Mitnadvim) to move from
Biz class to econnomy for a roun trip to LAX in Biz ( thay also
wrote the ticket is worth 4000$. So it is free on W class which is
not easy to book.
I payed 6000$ for my ticket. I offered the manger to give me F class round trip and 3 empty seats in Y + biz class food and service...but i told him it was
A joke. He almost agreed
Everyone refused so the mannager chose a lady that was on R and bumped
Her to Y
Y was not full.
F was full with 10 paying pax and 2 upgrades
There was a lot of balagan when they call us to the gate just to find out
we need to stay anoter hour before boarding.
Lior
By the way
2 pilots were sitting in 11 K and H and they where
not on duty. They just came back home.
Thats why the bussines class was overbook

You were on the 17/04 LAX -> TLV Flight???
I was there as well, And another forum member, We could all do a FF summit
in the C Class!
(You forgot also the daughter of the pilot which was moved from economy to business).
I was trying to move a friend from economy to business for 700$, I knew there are 2 availble seats but got no luck on doing so...
I was on 12D

(i dont wanna be the guy who complains all the time, but...)
See this? This right here? This is why El Al is fundamentally flawed!
They rather upgrade somebody who has a protektziya over somebody who is actually willing to pay for the product! nobody will deny that any airline worldwide will gladly offer preferred treatment to their employees and their families, but they would never do it if it hurts paying customers!
I don't blame the guys who use these kind of kombinot - I have done the same in the past and will happily do it again - but from El Al's point of view and for their customers, it's just wrong.
(And just so ppl wont tell me I only complain about El Al, I actually had a severe baggage damage with them this week, which they took care of efficiently and fast. well done)

If you'll read carefully what ebzed said above, you'll note that he's trying to get someone upgraded with paying for it...not trying to get it for free

just in case I wasn't clear... I was trying to say that they should immedeately let him buy the upgrade instead of upgrading somebody because she is the daughter of the pilot...!

Most of the pilots in El Al don't care about the company. Only about the salary and putting family and friends in C or F.
The OP from page 1 was talking about the 14th April.
I was at that flight...at 10K
I missed you in 3 days

So... the ultimate flyertalk user would make his/her child into an El Al pilot. Good thinking. :D

The young pilots don't get the same pay as the older ones (and will never get..)

Indeed, I can confirm that, Sometimes the salary different can be up to x4 times between old pilot and new pilot, This is due to the agreement that was signed at the time.
(The person who signed it was an old pilot who took care for his ... and his friends ... not caring about the new generation...)
Personally i think that the old ones are over paid and the new one dont earn enough for what they do..., The new ones are more service oriented (I never saw an old pilot going out checking the first/business class pax, making sure everything is ok...)
(BTW, EL-AL have already 2 female pilots...)

Now that sounds intriguing....maybe I should get on one of those flights ;)
