I had the opportunity to watch a 15 minute zumba demonstration a few months ago, and it looks interesting, fun, and not at all like I'd really notice that I was exercising. However, I'm not sure I want to attend a class--I don't know that I could keep up and I'm not the most coordinated person!

Any suggestions on DVD's?

DVDs aren't a bad idea for when on the road (or at home). Throw one in the laptop & good to go in the room.

Cheers.

Don't worry about not being able to keep up. That doesn't stop anybody in any of the zumba classes I've gone to.

I suggest looking for a place that does drop-ins rather than signing up for a class series so you can decide whether or not you like it. There are several teachers at the dance studio I go to and their styles vary quite a bit, with some of them "dancier" than others. So it is worth checking out a few classes to find one that meets your needs.

I also wouldn't worry about it and just go ;)

The class around here is full of people of all shapes/sizes and ability. They all seem to love it.

I think I'm probably more concerned about what I think people will think when they see me.

I am leaning towards DVD's, but haven't found any that jump out at me. Any suggestions?

Have you tried zumba.com? or perhaps, local library to check out DVDs to see if you like them without the cost.

Agree with the others, don't worry, just try and enjoy.

I didn't think about checking the local library to see if they have any zumba videos. ^

:) I don't think you are alone....I've never really understood why people care so much what others think though.

I don't know why I'm like that... And, honestly, what they'd say probably wouldn't be that bad, but it's more the thought of it that has me worked up! :) Yes, I know, I'm odd!

I'll ask my Zumba instructor tomorrow and will let you know what she recommends.

I would also suggest you try a class - nobody really cares what the other person looks like/is doing. Even the best students are typically way too busy to notice what anybody else is doing. If it bothers you that much, stay at the back, though it's harder to follow the instructor. Trust me, I dance 3 times/week and even when I used to be at the back I would notice other people only as far as to try to keep up with the class if I couldn't see what the instructor was doing. This is not DWTS, I promise!

I just don't think that it would be as much fun doing it at home, especially if you are not an experiences dancer, it would be way to frustrating. It's not like yoga which is very well suited to be practiced from a DVD. I would say I'm a fairly advanced dancer and well coordinated and I still had trouble keeping up with the new DVD the instructor gave me to learn (she sometimes uses me as an assistant teacher). Go, you'd love it. We have some fairly heavy and uncoordinated people in our classes and they are doing great, having and absolute blast. I have never heard one negative comment about anybody, even from typically b..chy individuals.

If you have a Wii, Xbox etc. they have Zumba for those as well.

I realized a long time ago that people are, in general, too concerned with how silly they think they look to think about how anybody else looks.

One thought re: DVDs is that you might see if your local library has any you could borrow to try out. I think netflix has exercise videos, too, though not sure if they have any for zumba.

This is probably true, but I think I'm more likely to stick with it if at least at first, I'm not worried about how silly I look in front of other people. :)

My instructor recommended that you try a zumba gold class if one is available. It's geared towards older or not as mobile audience and the pace tends to be slower, giving you a chance to learn the steps. Chances are that most people there would have similar misgivings and I seriously doubt anybody would be watching or judging anybody else. A zumba gold DVD would also be a good choice, it would be easier to keep up.

Ok, so first step is looking for either a Zumba Gold class, or a Zumba Gold DVD. :)
