I find booking rentals to be a royal pain. So hard to find best deals, incorporate the right coupons, get miles.
Trying to book April 11-14 3 day rental in 90403 - budget preferred (one block from me), with AA miles first, hotels second.
Can someone kindly take me through their process?

Have you checked out Evan!'s excellent thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/milesbuzz/1166514-q1-2011-car-rental-bonus-promos.html) in the MilesBuzz! forum with an exhaustive list of rental car bonuses?
It's sorted by duration, company, and program - with the best offers in a "Hot List" at the top.

IMHO, unless you have a special gift, you have to really decide if you're out for the lowest rate or the best mileage deal at a reasonable rate (which certainly won't be the lowest rate). Which choice you make, takes you down two totally different roads in your search. If I can't find a "reasonable" rate for a mileage deal, I totally dismiss mileage/points as my objective, and simply look for the lowest rate. If you don't do that, imho, you'll drive yourself nuts looking for the "magic" combination.

Thanks for help. I would rather have AA miles first and price second

I believe Budget no longer gives miles for non-airport pickups.
I have zero knowledge of any general policy, but I do know that certain off-airport site Budget locations that are franchised owned, are subject to the whims of the applicable Budget district office, and I do know that in a particular instance, they have ruled "no mileage". What pisses me off, is that when you book online, you are provided with NO NOTICE WHATSOEVER if a particular off site location participates in awarding mileage NOR are you provided with ANY notice if ANY budget location (off site or otherwise) is a "participating" location in ANY advertised budget offer.
Talk about a potential or real consumer fraud issue...
