US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - LAX and SFO cutbacks?

View Full Version : LAX and SFO cutbacks?

I've just heard through my grapevine that US may be ending flights to LAX and SFO. Denver may be the furthest west coast destination with United taking over east coast routing to LAX and SFO. This would also mean the US LAX and SFO clubs would no longer be needed.
This is an unsubstantiated rumor...just wondering if anyone heard anything similar.

I'd be surprised, considering that US and UA have extended the codeshare to flights out of SFO. It would be foolish to eliminate flying to LAX and SFO, especially considering that those two are some of the top destinations out of CLT. Plus, UA is still in bankruptcy - it wouldn't make sense to turn over that flying to UA until they're out of Chapter 11.

Do your sources also say that US will cut flying to SEA, LAS or PHX? If they did that too, then DEN would be the westernmost point served by US.

Also, why keep the 321s around then - they're pretty much used on the transcons.

However, who knows what Dave has up his sleeve.

There has been a rumor floating around this board for several months that the SFO club will be closing - apparently the girls working there have heard the rumor also.

didn't hear anything about them ending flying.however, i did hear something from a pit ticket agent that us is going to furlough all employees at lax, sfo, phx, las, den, san and turn all ground handling services over to ua(ie ticketing, gate, ramp, catering, baggage). also, the sfo club closure is a rumor. called club admin. they said they've heard that too, but there are no plans to shut it down.

Also heard rumors that SFO club was closing, but also heard that old terminal that USAIR uses will be demolished soon (as soon as legal stuff is overcome) and that USAIR will move over to UA terminal.

No wonder the DOJ fought the US/UA merger. Just how high will fares be raised when all of these seats heading west are eliminated?

If fares would go that high, then new entrants will pick up the capacity: ATA, FL and HP, among others, have all been expanding transcontinental networks recently. There might be a loss of non-stops PHL/CLT-SFO/LAX, but the total available seats on the routes may actually increase as other airlines add capacity and/or enter the market.

The club at LAX will most definately close when operations are moved to T6 sometime in January.

I STRONGLY doubt that US will give up the very long-distance flying it needs to help keep its operating costs down...

The rumor had to do with both the LAX and SFO club closings. My assumption that may impact the US flights to/from both destinations. Since I have caught the redeye back from LAX many times, that club did allow me to kill many hours of excessive pre-board time. Hate to see it go...I don't look forward to warding off panhandlers during my wait time now.

Hey, just noticed this post number matches the number tattoo on my head.

So if these important clubs close, then it's a better deal to join the United Club....so that you can then use the UA facility when traveling on US or United.

With a US club card, you wouldn't be able to enter United's club when flying US.

Get yourself a free pass http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif just buy a walk-up, fully refundable UA ticket for that day. When you're ready to board your US flight get it refunded on the way out...

It's as easy and natural as buying a RR ticket on eBay 3 hours before your flight http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Nicely done, Tom! No headbanging required!

I'm sure if US does change terminals and close the clubs, that they would either consider the UA club a "joint" club or waive the UA flight requirement. The LAX club personnel are indeed the best.

This does not surprise me at all. Contracting all US west coast operations to UA makes perfect sense. Why pay all these mechanics, ground crew, GA's etc for two or three flights a day? US will benefit from UA's economy of scale and the equipment commonality makes this very easy to do.

Don't get me wrong, the US agents on the west coast are some of the very best in the system-they deserve better.

Looking at the big picture--US is unraveling very rapidly. Within the next year I expect them to be primarily feeding UA hubs for West Coast travel. US will only retain transcons where O&D traffic supports it.

I would also expect UA to continue to feed US hubs with traffic for the Eastern Corridor and the Caribbean. That is US's value add, but will come at the expense of more equipment returned to lenders through US bankruptcy #2. US can't survive alone and the only way for it to continue in any form is to become part of UA, one way or another. It's sad, but I have become resigned to this fact.
