I am planning to take my wife and kids (3) to Hawaii using US miles on UA metal over Christmas 2004. What are my chances of getting tkts and when can I call the CP line?

When I booked our Hawaii trip for 1/04 back when the UA partnership had just started (I think around 4/1/03), there was very little availability around Christmas time. Actually I think there were only 2-3 possible outbounds and 2-3 possible returns, all of which made for a trip that was either too short or too long for us.

Since our dates were flexible, we shifted the vacation into January for this reason.

I'm pretty sure that we have access to the same award availability as people in the UA program. Since the US-UA partnership is less than a year old, you might have better luck asking on the UA board.

Your best bet is to figure out when you wnat to go and then call 330 days before that. Sometimes it helps to book a next day return and then keep bumping the return back as flights become available until you have the desired length trip.

5 award seats on the same flights to/from Hawaii will be tough. Perhaps you could do a mix of revenue and award?

Where in Hawaii do you want to go?

UA flies LAX-HNL/OGG/LIH/KOA, SFO-HNL/OGG/LIH/KOA, DEN-HNL. Basically take whatever you can get (even an open jaw). It's relatively easy to get an intra-islands flight. E.g. Aloha Airlines flights with United miles cost only 5k.

Once *A redemptions become available consider Air Canada connections as well.
