Headed to Europe soon and thinking of how much walking I did in London last fall. I would guess several miles a day. My feet were killing me in what I thought were comfy shoes and boots!!
I bought a pair of ballet slippers thinking they would be great, but in reality just wearing them around for short periods of time they aren't very comfy at all.
I will also be doing a good bit of standing as I will have a booth at a conference during the end of the trip.
Any good suggestions on keeping my feet happy and still pretty at the same time? I would bring my nursing shoes (I still may) but really looking for something more stylish.

Check out Keen (http://www.keenfootwear.com/)shoes. They are best known for their sandals, but they have some dress shoes that are supposed to be very comfortable. As soon as the temperature hits anything resembling spring, I tend to live in my Keen sandals as much as possible.

Try Born or Born Crown shoes sold at Macy's or Nordies. You may be able to snag a great pair at Nord Rack. They are very comfy. If you are near a Clarke's shoe store, those are cushy as well for walking and standing comfort. You can also get Dr. Scholl gel inserts if you have no time. Good luck.

Regular ballet flats wouldn't have enough support for me, but there are some varieties with support - like Privo or Merrells. I just did a trade show and wore Keen boots most days (http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/,2467J_Keen-Carlisle-Low-Boots-Leather-For-Women.html) They're great for travel (I wore them for a week in snowy/sleety Amsterdam last fall too) and look nice with pants. I wore Privo Mary Janes the days I didn't wear the Keen boots. Other brands that are supportive and fit me well are Dansko and Softspot - Clarks & Born are too narrow for me (but Privo - owned by Clarks - fit me go figure;))
For knee high boots, I have a pair of Rockports and a pair from Softspots - both with low heels - that are exceedingly comfortable as well, though I don't usually travel with taller boots.

I had a pair of Rockport sandals for years that were so comfy I couldn't bear to part with them (and they stank to high heaven for the last two years I had them). My husband has some Cole Haan's with Nike Air that he loves. I'd but there is a women's version.
I had faciitis so I make sure all my shoes have gel in them (I will buy inserts, if necessary). So you might be able to modify a pair of shoes you already have with an insert.

I wear mostly GEOX - there are a number of ballet flat styles which have excellent support, and the shoes last a very long time. The added benefit for US readers is that they can be purchased for much cheaper in the US than in Europe, especially via sites such as Amazon or Zappos.
If you are going to the UK you may want to check the Clarks shops as they carry different styles than in the US. I tend not to like the US styles but some of the UK ones I find attractive; sadly they do not however fit my size 42 feet.
This style is a little more narrow in look but very comforable http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003JQLPV0/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=1278548962&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001792JLG&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=01H2VE0C9F2QQD6KJK6F
This one in black is my favourite with jeans and has lasted a few years of hard walking http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XRBZL8/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=1278548962&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001792JLG&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=01H2VE0C9F2QQD6KJK6F
I also like many of the GEOX Lola styles. Names are a little confusing as Stefany and Lola apply to many of their styles, and they just change the number and style every few years.
Hush puppies are also carried in many shops in Europe; I have one pair of the body shoe line which is a more casual ballet style but very comfortable. I would only wear it with jeans/trousers however. http://www.hushpuppies.com/US/en-US/Product.mvc.aspx/22651W/49773/Womens/Sincerity/Black-Leather-Stretch/H502492 In reality one cannot see the various materials on this shoe unless one looks very closely (at least in black)
ECCO makes some 'pretty' shoes but I have never been able to find a pair which fits me so cannot comment on comfort.
There is also a long thread here about shoe recommendations but I find like you that many are not my personal style.

I love my Merrell Tetra Launch boots-- they're waterproof, amazingly comfortable, and I feel like a superhero in them. I wish Merrell would do more plain leather shoes. If they can do simple in boots, can't they in shoes? All the shoes have zany material combinations that look cheezy to me...

I swear by Dansko clogs for conferences - if they're worn with dress pants, they aren't as frumpy or clunky looking. They have a lot of patterns and styles so it's nice for variety.

I swear by SUPERfeet arch supports, I add them to my flats. The 1/2 black ones that are sold at Nordstroms shoe department can be added to any dress shoe, making them much more comfortable for long days.
I also like AGL brand flats and some Donald Pliner's (some of them are cute!)

I posted an extensive list of what I like for comfort in January so it's fairly current on what is available.
Some of my favorites are listed below as well. I second Dansko for being comfortable for standing long periods of time.
Dansko Bobbi - I have these in black, I like them so much I may get the brown as well, the have a removable insert. The cuff is adjustable or can be worn all the way up.
http://www.thewalkingcompany.com/dan...ed-nappa/13444
Born Crown Yolando - I have these boots in black, they do not have a removable insert, however an insert will fit inside if you are going to be on your feet for hours. They got me through a 5 hour class reunion with little discomfort.
http://www.borncrown.com/Product.asp...CategoryID=102
Dansko Summer - A co-worker introduced me to Dansko's recently, so far so good.

Dansko Solstice - Another comfortable pair.

There is a brand called Naot, they are phenomenally comfortable, great for your feet and usually found at shoe stores that specialize in comfort or ortho type shoes. They have a true anatomical cork footbed with real arch support and have some pretty cute styles. The only drawback is that they are not inexpensive. Personally, I opt for a couple pairs of really great shoes that I wear to death, but I understand the love of shoes. View Naot's styles (http://www.naot.com/cgi-bin/view.pl?action=show_all&CAT=WMnShoes).
Another brand I love, but not quite a true comfort shoe, Tsubo. They are a little more trendy, very lightweight, extremely comfortable. I have the Acreas in Merlot and walk the office, airport, train an all day class in them etc. Great shoes! I wanted to buy them in black but they were out and they were so comfortable I randomly bought merlot. I have another style too, can't remember the name. Here's the link for Tsubo (http://www.tsubo.com/productslist.aspx?g=w&categoryid=414).
I always think the Danskos look so comfy but they are not dressy enough for me at work.

You might take a look at Softspots, Clarks, Clarks Indigo (modern) and Clarks Privo (mostly sporty). I search on Zappos.com for comfort shoes and find the look I want.
I wish I could wear Merrell every day, but they are sporty looking, and sadly I can't wear them to weddings...
You might also consider whether you should have an extremely comfortable pair of walking shoes (and good socks) that you can use when your more attractive footwear becomes uncomfortable.
Or consider what I do on urban vacations which include sightseeing followed by a meal in a nice restaurant, which is wear the comfort shoes, and carry dressy, lightweight shoes or sandals which I slip on just before we get to the restaurant. I always have a bag with room for extra items and purchases.

I bought a pair of Dansko Pros before my RTW trip because a lot of nurses where I work wear them. I'm glad I had a little time to test them out, because, for me at least, they would be awful for walking all day. Now for standing, that's another thing altogether, and I can wear them for 10-12 hours on my feet in the Emergency Dept. with much less leg fatigue than many of my other shoes. Do you, or others, wear them for walking, or another model Dansko?

I have worn the professional clogs for the past 18 months. At first the high arches were 'weird,' much like when I first wore Birkenstocks, but I got used to them. I've walked in the quite a bit and had pretty good luck, especially once the pair was worn in. I just switched to a new pair a month ago and walking was not quite as comfortable...of course, there is some value to havng tread on the shoes! ;)

I have a pair of Dansko sandals (old model - can't find anything current that looks similar - they have heel coverage & lace-up - sort of a gladiator look - with the thick rubber sole) I wear them for travel & lots of walking - I think they're great and so comfortable for me! Especially for unstable surfaces (I wore them recently on a 2 week business trip to Tanzania where I had to walk a couple kilometers to work across a very bumpy dirt road) The clogs/wooden soles and higher soles don't look quite as comfy to me.
I'm looking for a new walking sandal, and am contemplating this one: Dansko Surraya (http://www.zappos.com/dansko-surraya-black-crinkle-patent) or this Dansko Sissy (http://www.zappos.com/dansko-sissy-black-pull-up)
For dressier/more work related (hopefully less walking ;-) I have the Softspots Neima (http://www.zappos.com/softspots-neima-dark-brown-patent) which is fabulous - I can wear for work and evening because of the shine - the brown is far more flexible than I thought it would be (comes in black too but I bought the brown on sale) I can stand and do some walking in this but wouldn't want it to be my only walking shoe on a trip.

I have both of these, they both work well walking on cobblestone and uneven streets and for long periods of time. Neither have as high of a heel/platform as the Danskos. If you get the Danskos please post a follow up as I think they look nice and I have had good luck with Danskos from a comfort standpoint. I do agree with all the "Dansko is an excellent standing shoe and a just okay walking shoe" comments with one notable exception, I can walk for hours in my Bobbi Dansko boots. My Dansko dress shoes not so much.

I also like Josef Seibel shoes and sandals - they've got good thick soles and support.
I have a pair of Thierry Rabotin ballet flats that look quite dressy and are comfortable. I don't think I'd schlep around town all day every day in them - too expensive/leather too soft, but I do wear them to sightsee when I know the streets/sidewalks are in decent shape.

Kate_Canuck - you must have narrower feet than I do - both La Canadienne (gorgeous waterproof boots!) and Josef Seibel are far too narrow for me, which is probably why I love Dansko - their standard width is very wide, and fits me very well.
I had a 40% discount coupon for Sierra Trading Post yesterday so I ordered some new Privo black mary janes for $35- my current pair are ready to fall apart and I love them for travel - especially flying. Sadly they didn't have any Dansko included in the sale:(

What size do you take? I haven't purchased anything yet, and may not for this trip. All the ones I love are out of my budget so I may just go with what I currently have now. A pair of Enzos were really comfortable for walking and also good for the cooler days, and not sure about shoes yet.
I am thinking of bringing my Klogs I wear for work to walk and have shoes to change into when at destination as I can go on my feet standing and also walking miles in them. I haven't found Dansko to be very comfortable or to fit me well. I have very high arches and they hurt my feet.
I will keep looking and I appreciate the suggestions- lots of ideas for a later purchase when my buget is a little fatter!

If you are having trouble affording these brands, try the Zappos discount
website 6pm.com. A word of advice for shoes that you wear all day, do not
be tempted into slip ons that depend on elastic inserts to stretch for comfort.
The shoes might seem to fit great to begin with, but they will never stretch and mold to your foot because of the elastic give. As the day wears on, the pressure of the elastic becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Better to go with something adjustable, like a mary jane or a lace up, or just a ballet style
with more support in the footbed. The brand that seems to combine best a business casual look with a insole supportive enough for a lot of city walking is Ecco.

What size do you take? I haven't purchased anything yet, and may not for this trip.
I'm a size 42, almost impossible to find in Europe and Asia. The GEOX store in Salzburg will stock 1 or 2 unexciting styles a season in that size; the two in Manhattan around 57th Avenue at least have a few from past season on hand. Anyone in that size range will most likely find the best selection is still in North America.
Re pricing, I second 6pm.com but have also found very good prices on Amazon, and they often have sales. The Hush Puppies I mentioned earlier were about $40 on Amazon during current season. I also bought Aerosoles for $29 earlier this year, although for years I have avoided that brand as I don't like the look and quality anymore. These ones seemed really not my style, but I ordered them. The heel was loose but after adding suede heel grips they are very comfortable and I find the look is growing on me (much more appealing in person in the black, and suitable with trousers or jeans) http://www.aerosoles.com/product1.asp?P=CAREFREE
If you can try on sizes in a brick and mortar store, and then browse online, you may find some very good bargains. Happy shopping! :)

I've been asking the same question lately-looking for comfortable but decent looking walking shoes for two and a half weeks in London and Paris. After a few tries and some returns (love free shipping and Zappos!) I have finally settled on a couple of good options. I was looking for a pair of ballet flat style black shoes and some sandals. I tried the Dansko version that is called Pam (ordered them from The Walking Company) and they were super comfy but just not cute enough for me. I tried to love them but kept thinking "unattractive" and I didn't want to spend the money to wear them only for two weeks. Sent them back. Ordered some Merrels with extra support and padding (I find that they are sometimes lacking there) but they were very stiff and rubbed my heel. Finally, tried the Mephisto Francia. http://www.zappos.com/mephisto-francia Bingo! Reasonably stylish and excellent support. I've worn them around the house for 3-4 hours and they feel great. I also bought a pair of Naot sandals. I've never been impressed with their styles but these are really cute-Treasure is the name.http://www.thewalkingcompany.com/naot-treasure-2-strap/m3710-3801. I've worn them all over town this week and am getting lots of compliments.

I love Patagonia's Maha Breathe (in black). It's stylish, comfortable, and city appropriate:
http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/patagonia-footwear-womens-maha-breathe-flat?p=79684-0-155
Although they are described as very casual, they're really sleek enough for everyday city wear (they won't work with formal business attire, but they are professional enough for most circumstances). I live in New York, and wear these everywhere and with everything (skirts, dresses, pants, whatever). I routinely (3x or more per week) walk from the mid-50s to 14th street wearing these shoes. I wear them all day. All night. I love these shoes.
Basically, they are like ballet flats, but are much more comfortable, and the mesh part makes them great in warmer weather (but I've been wearing them all spring, even in 50 degree weather and have been happy, or with tights). They dry quickly if you get caught in the rain, and mine still look new, even with all the wear.

I have had the best luck with Merrell, Cole Haan Air, Mephisto, Born, and Clark's (yes, they do have attractive ones now although I do think they've downgraded the quality). I am always on the look out for shoes in the pretty & comfortable category.
During my time in Europe I had noticed women mostly wearing ordinary Clark's so if you choose to go this route you won't look out of place.
As a side note, I wish Zappos had an easier search mechanism to help find pretty walking shoes instead of searching through a ton of clunky old-manlike/nurse-type lace-up sneakers simply to find the few pretty walking shoes that work with dresses and skirts. All that agree should email zappos suggesting this new category. Shoe manufactures should strive to make comfortable pretty shoes for women!!

Welcome Alison and since you bumped this thread, I will update to say that today I wore the Hush Puppies I linked earlier in the thread with jeans on a very cold, wet day to walk all over a cobblestoned town. Yesterday I wore them for a very long day of shopping.
I had to finally retire my beloved GEOX Stefany and cannot find a pair to replace them yet. The current styles don't fit me well, and the ones I linked earlier actually squeaked when I finally found them in my size (and in Germany of all places!) But I have worn all my GEOX until they end up with holes in the leather etc after many years of use.
I did purchase two pairs of Aerosoles for $29 in the US a few weeks ago and they ripped my feet apart after a few hours wear. I still have open sores on my feet. :(

FWIW, I've found that Mephistos are totally worth the somewhat heart-stopping price -- my particular favorites have gotten me through multiple Parisian walking days without a blister or pain (http://www.zappos.com/mephisto-celka-black-croco). Sadly, they spend more time racing from terminal to terminal in DFW but they work beautifully for both casual and work.
If anyone is curious, they're significantly less expensive in France and you can sometimes get them at a great discount from Sierra Trading Post.

I am very, very picky about my shoes. I agree that it's difficult to find comfortable yet stylish shoes. So far, what I love and what works for me is COLE HAAN with NIKE AIR Technology. Compared to the other brands, Cole Haan has everything from sandals, flats, wedges, high heels & boots (all with Nike Air Technology), and with pretty designs to choose from. The collaboration with Maria Sharapova has really improved their line. As a testament to how comfortable and stylish their shoes are, Angelina Jolie wore the shoes for red carpet events while she was preggers!

I had a pair of flats when Nike Air first came out, and before they were adopted by Cole Haan. I still mourn that they wore out as they were so cute and so comfortable. I may have to check Cole Haan now. Thanks for the tip.
(To add to my previous posts I just purchases two more pairs of Birki for about 20 Euro each on Amazon.de, and I am drooling over several of the new fall styles of GEOX. I did manage to break in one pair of the Aerosoles but I find them rather clunky, and they don't seem to be holding up well compared to my GEOX)
I also purchased about 10 pairs of Talbots flats for $10-20 in their clearance section online this summer. They are no longer the quality of the Italian made shoes they used to sell, but are very cute and quite comfortable for shorter days. I wore them for my commute recently which was about 15 minutes walking plus short train ride plus 15 minutes walking, then to work all day, and the reverse commute at the end, and my feet felt fine. I wouldn't recommend them for all day sightseeing etc however, but as an inexpensive pair which pack well I could suggest them.

I am trying to find comfortable/stylish shoes (particularly heels) for daily living that can also translate to travel. Right now, in my price range, I'm looking at Aerosoles, Naturalizers, Soft, Eurosoft and Lifestride. I tried on several pairs this weekend and ended up buying 3 pairs. Right now, I'm wearing tube socks with them in the house to see if they are truly comfy before I wear them outside, discover they are uncomfortable (because I can't return them then).
I know comfort shoes have a reputation for not being sexy and being frumpy, but I did find some cute pairs (despite having a thicker heel). Thoughts?

I am fed up with the Aerosoles. Naturalizer has some very nice styles right now. I had a pair of Naturalizer loafers which were my favourite walking shoe and I finally had to retire them when they developed a Euro size hole in the sole during Snowmageddon last year.
This weekend it rained and I still reached for my GEOX over any other pair. They are the most comfortable shoe I own, stylish, and available in the US at very large discounts. Not every pair has worked for me, but they continue to win out over all my other brands.

Why are you fed up with Aerosoles? Of the 3 pairs I bought this weekend, the aerosoles Playhouse in black suede are the most comfortable. I think Naturalizer has some sleeker looking styles though. My last pair of naturalizer flats that I wore to Brussels KILLED my feet. I couldn't understand why?

I have a pair of black suede Aerosole with a buckle which were $29 and they are very comfortable, but the heel was too wide and loose and even heel grips don't fix the problem entirely.
But since they were comfortable otherwise, I puchased two pairs of flats recently. One pair cuts into my foot all around because the trim has too little 'give'. The other pair needs heel grips, but the finishing on the heel of the shoe (top interior) is poorly constructed and hence the heel grips don't fit properly and rub. I have tried three different brands and types of heel grips now.
It seems to be a case of decent comfort, EXCEPT for the cheap materials used on the trim on both pairs, and because the trim touches the foot, it needs to have give and not have lumps or bumps which rub.

I swear by Tod's. Their sneakers, boots, loafers and other shoes with proper soles are comfortable enough to walk around in for hours while sightseeing, and also sophisticated enough to wear out to dinner.
Their driving loafer type shoes are wonderful, but not suitable for doing a lot of walking as they wear out quickly.

Yes, the Aerosoles tends to have very cheap looking heels and trims. I'm trying to break in a pair of Eurosofts that I bought that are really nice. They are leather and were only 54.95 which is great since Soffts (the same company) are usually in the $79-100 range. But the aerosoles feel the best.
Regarding the heel, I think the wider heel contributes to the feeling of stability. I cannot do a thin stiletto heel! so these 3" or less wider heels are a lifesaver. Again, I think Naturalizers look sleeker overall and some Soffts (others have that same clunky heel) but the wider heel helps to distribute your weight better.

I'm getting the Tod's canvas flats next. They are relatively inexpensive ($45 online) and everyone swears by them. Although, to be honest, I HATE the casual look of a canvas show and would prefer a ballet flat, flats can be hit or miss (as I experienced in Brussels.). I'm also waiting for a pair of boots by Fitzwell which is supposed to be another comfort brand, but I can't believe I'll get lucky enough to find heels and boots all in a short time frame that feel great. ;)

How old are your feet? The natural padding on the soles of your feet wears out as you get older. Mine used to be fine with Naturalizers, Aerosoles, etc. and walking on concrete all day in shoes with the thinnest of soles...before I got heel spurs and started waking practically crippled and having to walk it out. Those brands are what I call comfortable shoes, not comfort shoes. Quality comfort brands like Mephistos, Ecco, Merrell and a few others make all the difference for long days on concrete because they have quality built in orthotics that support, cushion and balance you, even help your posture. But as a younger lady, the trade off of style for function was one I wasn't willing to sacrifice, either.

And the shops just snicker when I ask for a size 42.

I'm young but I've had 2 ankle surgeries so my ankle will never be the same. Ugh, I can't imagine my foot/ankle problems will increase as I get older. The shoes I all bought (except one pair that's probably going back) have excellent padding. Those aerosoles feel amazing! The eurosofts have thick padding too and feel good but the leather will have to be broken. I also just found a great pair of beige flats by Earth Origins. Great padding and I feel as if I'm walking on clouds. I'm pretty sure I could sightsee all day in those. ^

The padding in those brands does feel plenty cushy, Burberry. The insoles of the Merrells, Mephistos, Eccos, and the true comfort brands do not feel as soft, but instead use a dense memory foam and other higher tech stuff that is more supportive. The engineering that goes into their footbeds make an amazing difference, keeping me able to "keep up and keep on" which I couldn't do if my feet were killing me.

It's funny how one shoe in any particular brand will be amazing for extended walks or standing, and yet others are so totally uncomfortable for any period of time. I have some Cole Haan with Nike Air that are dreamy-- others I can't wear for more than a few minutes. Same with Naturalizers. I get both from the outlet mall near me.
I found that Jessica Simpson boots were about the most comfortable for me, especially the platforms. They look super hot and yet are extremely easy to wear for long periods. I have very high arches and a high instep, so that usually compounds the issue of trying to find a comfy pair of boots. Anyone else have favorite boots?

Regular boots, snow boots, hiking boots, or dress boots? :D
For daily wear, either in bad weather or just in chilly weather, I have a few that I love. I have a pair of Rocky men's black military boots that if I'm wearing pants, usually look decent enough and I've found that they're great for my ankle issues. I'll alternate those with my Danner desert sand military boots which are also very comfortable, but are taller, so they have their own perks and issues.
For really cold weather (football games in December/January, hunting), I have a pair of LaCrosse Alpha Iceman or Alpha Ice King boots that are amazing! They have a removable liner. I wore them for the first time to an NFL game in the middle of December last year. I usually complain that my feet always seem to get cold, regardless of what socks or how many layers of socks I wear. During the game, I kept telling Mr. Kipper, "My feet are still warm!"

Comfy pair of Sorels from when I lived in Utah for extreme winter weather. Keen ankle boots for city walking - I sprayed them with weatherproofing spray and wore them for an extremely wet & cold November trip to Amsterdam last year and my feet stayed warm & dry. And they are comfy! (but Keen sandals don't fit me at all.....) I have somewhat wide feet (esp my toe box) with high arches.
For work, with skirts - Rockport black leather to knee and Softspots brown leather to knee.......
Hiking boots - Vasque leather. Hiking shoes (good for wet weather warm season trips) Lowa goretex hiking shoes.....

I have high arches!!! My favorite boots have been from Kenneth Cole for over a decade. I have a pair now called Landbridge, very comfortable for walking. No break-in period. I may have bragged on them before.
I don't get what is comfortable to other women about "flats" but maybe it's because my feet are not shaped the same. Someone mentioned flats that don't seem to have any padding...that is what I always notice. Maybe I am just too used to a blocky heel.

For arch support, I go for Arcopedico New Sec (http://www.zappos.com/arcopedico-new-sec-navy) and Mephisto Elka (http://www.zappos.com/mephisto-elka). Depending on the weather, sometimes I bring along these shoes just to wear around the room as I find that wearing them helps "massage" my feet in all the right places after a long day. My aunt who is used to wearing heels cannot wear anything that has a heel lower than 1", loves her Mephisto Elkas; they are like flats to her.

Yes - and they are fantastic!
I mainly wear the Aravon Fallon, which is sadly now discontinued. Farren is the replacement. They come in all widths (I'm a 7.5 2E), are very high quality, very durable and very, very comfortable.
They also look decent, unlike the running type shoes.
I also use the Aravon Farah - it's a mary jane with velcro on the strap - for airports.
I've never tried any of their heels, only flat shoes.

Merrell Lorelei leather lace-ups. Very lightweight, reasonably good arch support, non-slip surface. Went to England in October, spent 10 days in London and then 5 days in Lancaster and Newcastle - went up to the Lake District and hiked and then went for a long hike along Hadrian's Wall. The Merrells did difficult double duty as city shoes and hiking shoes (not boot).
I liked the black leather pair I had so much I bought a grey leather pair on closeout and am eyeing the brown pair.
Also, I replaced the laces with elastic lock laces, which made them almost slip-ons.

Unfortunately the quality of Sorel has gone way down. I purchased a pair of Kamik boots that look just like Sorel (apparently based on the same design, but the difference is that Sorel changed the material and now manufactures the shoe in China). My husband as a pair of very old Sorels and they beat any boot hands down for cold weather.
I just bought a pair of these. They look reasonable okay with a longer pair of jeans. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=17412304
They used to make the perfect flat for work attire that did not look like merrell at all. Of course it is now discontinued.

I've heard about the sad decline of Sorel quality. Guess I'm lucky that since I bought my boots in, oh, 1993 (?) that I'll have them until I die^ Same with my LLBean duck boots from 1987. Possibly 1986. Still going strong!
I just ordered a couple pairs of brown ankle boots from shoebuy.com - we'll see if I like either pair and will keep them. I currently have a pair of aerosoles brown leather ankle boots and they're not very comfortable - I've had them about 5 years and worn them for work, but not days when I know I'll be doing a lot of standing or walking.....

I have Josef Seibel Kalley boots in black leather and Clarks Wish Excite in brown leather. I wear them both while traveling and making customer calls and they are both very comfortable and I like the styles. I travel to cold weather places in the winter and tend to wear boots pretty much exclusively with my dresses. I am pretty sure I mentioned my Dansko Bobbi's in another post. I have had my Dansko's a couple of years now and they still look perfectly new and are really comfortable.
I have had ongoing plantar fasciitis issues in my left foot for a few years now, so I was on a serious search for shoes that are cute but not orthopedic looking to wear while walking around Paris and London during an upcoming trip. (Clearly my trusty, heavy Dansko clogs weren't going cut it.)
The great advice in this forum lead me to buy a pair of Naots. They were very comfortable with the insoles they came with, but *perfect* when paired with insoles from The Walking Company. I've been testing them on longer and longer walks in my own city, and they are fantastic. I just wanted to share this info with any of the rest of you with the same foot problems or of the same certain age. ;)

I always wear Crocs on vacation (not the ugly clogs). My favorites are the Crocs Athena (flip flops), Cleo (sandals) and Malindi (closed-toed flats). I can walk for miles in them and you don't need socks (less to pack).
Plus you can wash/wipe them clean every night and they dry overnight.

The thing about Naots is that I have incredibly wide feet, and those shoes are way too narrow for me. I now wear Mephistos in the summer, and hopefully this year I'll be wearing them more often than sneakers.
I wore my Blondo Vivianes to two concerts, one of which I danced at, and my feet were basically the only part of me NOT feeling like crap afterwards.

Hmm, the Blondos I saw online looked narrow - I shall have to look again. I have tried a couple pairs of Mephisto in the past and they didn't fit, and the newer Merrell styles (that look pretty) don't fit my feet either. For the Merrells at least- it's not just the width, it's where the arch starts - doesn't match up with my feet.

Merrell designs their women's shoes differently from their men's shoes. Have you tried a pair of Merrell's in men's (usually 2 sizes smaller than what you wear in women's) to see if those match up for you?

I've owned casual men's merrells in the past and am sort of looking now, but casual shoes aren't what I really need - I need something I can wear for work & travel, walk & stand in. And I haven't seen any "cute" in the men's that would work:D But for my goretex hikers and similar- I definitely shop Merrell (and other) men's lines.

Yeah, I actually got the Blondos a half size up because of my foot width and my orthotics, not because of my calves.
I've never paid attention to any Merrells I've tried on.
However, I just replaced my rainboots, and I had to get size 10s to fit my calves and jeans even though my feet are size 8!

I adore my merrell delight gloves, I also have the one that is the same shoe with the strap across, almost like a mary jane but it's on a diagonal. They go with my pretty dresses and skirts. Leather, they mold to your feet and feel beautiful. If you're not used to minimalist shoes the lack of foam and padding can feel really weird, but I've been preferring that kind of shoe for years now so it's good for me. On my most recent working 5 week trip to SE Asia, I wore nothing but my Mephisto Helens for the second year in a row. I broke both feet, a couple of years ago, one quite severely in an accident, and the Helens are the only shoes I can tolerate except closed shoes with insoles. November trip to Paris booked - so I just ordered a pair of the Blondo Vivianes to try:p I ordered 9W so we'll see if that fits or if I need to size up more.....
Some of the reviews (on the Nordstrom site) left me questioning the waterproof-ness. Any issues there? (I can always silicone spray the leather if I need to - I've done that for non-waterproof shoes for light use and not had any problem with discoloration....)
I ordered some Keen knee boots from Sierra Trading Post - I haven't returned them - they "sort of" fit - they fit, and the arch support I love - but the calf is a little tight and the ankle a little loose. I've lost 25 lbs and am continuing to lose, so I'm holding the boots a little longer to see if I like the fit better as my body changes....If not, I'll send them back (STP has a great return policy)

My Blondo's are going to Paris with me next March. They are the most COMFORTABLE walking boot I have ever had. I got the Blondo Valente. I received my boots from Nordstrom in April, they were broken in within days the leather is so supple. I wore them all over England and Ireland for 2 weeks at the beginning of May of this year. I had no issues whatsoever with the waterproof factor. There were no water spots on the boots and my feet were dry the whole time. The boots probably are not waterproof in the sense that you can stand in water for extended periods. You can go through normal rain and puddles in rainstorms and count on them being dry. I highly recommend Blondos. I have to use an insert in mine, I wear the Walking Company inserts. I will be buying another pair of Blondos this year.

One more thing, when I got my boots it was April which is hot here in Dallas. I only had them a month before my trip. When I first tried them on I was nervous, they felt a little stiff and I was like oh darn I don't have enough time to break them in. I wore them around the house and within 3 or 4 days they were as soft and flexible as boots that I had worn for a while. I am just saying don't panic with the first time you try them on, if the fit is right they will soften up.

I just bought this pair of boots (Nine West Technobeats). I love combat boots, and these look cumbersome but there is a zipper so no difficulties! I'm going to wear them when I head to Taipei this coming December/January because I live in a tropical country. :D
i wore my Converse sneakers to Tokyo recently, and as I walked everywhere, my feet felt like they are on the verge of falling off. Not cool, though they (along with socks) helped to keep me warm and dry despite the strangely low temperature in summer and the constant rain. Should have brought/bought some insoles, but I was being silly.

Wow, those are very cute. I was looking at a similar pair of boots from Lands End Canvas, but having a hard time justifying the price. These are a little less expensive, so I may have to give them a try.

Blondos arrived yesterday, much better fit for me than the Keens so I guess the Keens will be sent back. I ordered 9W, and the calf is wide for sure, but the toe? Not so much....So I need to wear around the house again tomorrow (I was out today) to see what I think.

My Blondo Vivianes somehow got up and walked away - I cleaned my whole apartment and can't find them - so I replaced them with a pair of Fidelines (http://www.blondo.ca/en/product/women/fall-winter/fideline#b4094-92). I am already madly in love with them.

I ended up having to return my Blondo Viviane - just not fitting correctly on my right foot. And I ended up keeping the tall Keens - and am in my 5th day walking around Paris - LOVE the Keens. Esp on Sunday in the rain^ (I also have short Keen ankle boots and privo lace-ups - I alternate)

It turns out that my Blondo Vivianes had walked into my parents' hallway closet, so with the cheapo pair I got a few weeks ago, I now have three pairs of high boots. I'm wearing the Fidelines right now because they weigh the most and I still overpack.

My two walking boots this season have been a black Dansko ankle boot and a brown Frye ankle boot. Both purchased at Nordstorm - have worn them all over five countries so far this fall and loving both of them!

New visitor to this forum - my current "everywhere" shoe is Allegria.
I don't do "hiking" type of walking. It's either running (slow) or urban walking.
I was very happy with Mephisto Helen sandals (with tabi socks when the weather demanded) as they healed me from a year of plantar fasciitis, and I was also happy with Fitflops until they gave me a stress fracture (the footbed became too soft and fractured my metatarsal joint).
I buy Allegria in a store, but I found a link to a catalog page http://www.alegriashoeshop.com/Alegria-Spring-2013-s/118.htm
I have clog style and closed heel styles. They have removable footbed that can take orthotics but despite my narrow heel, high arch, and Euro size 42 feet, I find them adequate straight from the store. The sole is kind of rocker-y and makes it easy to walk, and they hold up for long theme park days.
I am not sure if they qualify as "pretty". They're not dainty, and I know they look kind of goofy in the pictures but the variety of prints and textures takes the edge off a bit. The black kid leather Dayna Allegrias work with a business suit when I have too much walking on tap to wear the usual heels. Even though they look rather like clown shoes, I had many compliments on the red patent leather clogs!

Those are pretty neat shoes, lol. I was expecting some real clunkers ("clown shoes"). You're certainly right about the rocker-y part--they look like if you gave them a gentle push they'd rock for a couple minutes. So you, or anyone, like this shoe for walking, not just standing? They remind me of my Dansko Pros--love 'em for work, but not so much for hours of walking. I did hear the more flex sole models are much better for walking though.
I'm revisiting this thread as I'm going to Paris April 23. Hard to say in advance what I'll need--will check weather just at departure. Going to Bavaria after that, and I really hate taking more than one pair of shoes (plus the ones I wear). Any new finds for urban walking shoe/boot? I'll probably take my new Bernie Mev sandals (silver) since they weigh about a nanogram, are super comfy, and will have to do for "dress". A night at Moulin Rouge (I promised) is probably as wild as we'll get. If it's boot weather I'll wear them on the plane, so need the walking shoe.

They're theme park-worthy shoes. (Indeed, better for that than running shoes. Just returned from some parks, and saw quite a few people buying Crocs onsite who were removing running shoes to do so. Running shoes aren't meant for slower speeds.) I did half the time in the Mephistos and half in Allegrias. Much walking, but feet are fresh as daisies.
The rocker sole doesn't really get going until you begin to transfer weight, so standing is completely stable, and you're not really conscious of the sole being other than flat. It's like a flat sole with excess volume cut away.

My shoes of choice continue to be any of my GEOX ballerinas. I can highly recommend them for walking 10km++ a day, and they are fashionable and pretty shoes. They can be bought in America for a fraction of what we pay here, and last forever.
The only other brands I have found give me comfort as well as some style are Hush Puppies but only very limited styles; most are too clunky or unfashionable for me (it's a personal choice, but honestly I wouldn't wear most of the suggestions on this thread) My short winter boots of choice have been Hush Puppies chelsea boots, mainly because I cannot find any GEOX ones which fit my very large feet. I have to buy size 42/43 in America most of the time as 41 is usually the largest size here, but chelsea boots don't seem to be popular in the US. I love Aigle but they don't fit me and I seem to pass an Aigle shop every few streets to mock me. My tall boots of choice are suede shaft riding boots which are some unfamiliar brand bought in the US. That pretty much makes up my entire winter shoe wardrobe, with a handful of pretty but not practical bright ballet flats for warmer days or climates.
It's been around -5 to 5 in the last few days here and I'm just heading out the door for a long day of walking. I'll be wearing blood red suede GEOX Piumas.

I too, have begun to swear by Geox shoes. I've been wearing them for at least the last 5 years and have purchased all styles - some at the outlet, some at the regular shop.
My current favorite is Italia, which is a standard shoe for them, sometimes they add a decoration to the vamp and sometimes it's plain. Right now I'm wearing a version with a penny-loafer decoration, though I do also have them plain.
They last forever.

I want to love Geox but the few times I've tried them on, they don't fit. I don't have a lot of places nearby where they are sold, but if I'm traveling and I see them, I'll try them on just so I can try different styles. Ah well.
I'm still on the lookout for a new Dansko sandal - I love my lace-up style because of the flexibility if my feet swell (due to heat, etc-I don't typically wear sandals for air travel)

Geox sizing is a bit off. What they call a US size 9 is actually a size 39 in their sizes. Except they don't fit my size 9 foot. Most often I end up with a 40 or 41. I won't buy them online if they don't note the European sizing so I can get the right size.

I'm used to european sizing in Dansko & Birkenstocks, among others, so that alone doesn't throw me. I think it's just too narrow for my foot. I've tried on size 39-41 of loafer & ballet flat styles and they're either too narrow or short and when I fix the "short", the heel slips off. Ah well. Not all brands can fit all feet^

Mary's right about GEOX. I see the UK online stores often list the sizes incorrectly and will only buy based on the correct EU sizing.
But the styles also fit differently. The Piuma tends to fit wider than the Stefany, for instance. And I used to wear the ones that Mary wears for years and years but lately my feet don't like them as much (in that case I think that my feet changed over the years, not the shoe) I really like the Donna Euro mules for the look of the loafer with the comfort of a mule. One thing about GEOX stores is that they will usually give great service and have handheld inventory machines. They'll happily make suggestions and pull out several styles in sizes they think will work for you. I'm loathe to pay full price for much but did buy my latest pair of red ones from the Oxford Street location because I was so impressed with their effort to find me a pair which would fit. The Gare St Lazare location here does similar amazing service, although generally the service in the shops is quite good. Mary, I really liked having two close by at 57th and Lex and 57th and Park (I think?) The one on Lex used to go into the dungeon to find past years stock for me in my size, often on clearance.
I find that Clarks and their subbrands are awful for my feet; Hush Puppies tends to be loose around the heel. (And that brings on a side rant about the lack of those sueded heel grips in US shops which have mostly been replaced with those rubber gel ones. I love Pedag from Germany and am happy to see that they are now available online at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Pedag-Stop-Padded-Leather-Grips/dp/B004BD71JK/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_0 )
Question for the American posters: are Chelsea boots not worn there? I can't find a pair in my size but love them especially with tights and skirts. Usually I can expand my online search to US retailers but I can't seem to find much selection at all of Chelsea boots on US sites. It may just be one of those style differences or a matter of catch up but I'm genuinely curious. Thanks.

Ankle boots are VERY popular right now - in all sorts of variations. We just don't (or rarely) call them "chelsea boots" in America. I only knew what you were talking about because of my college love of all things Doc Marten:p I had a great friend in high school who wore them every day - for her, they were paddock boots. So they are around - try using different search terms?
Making sure we're talking about the same thing - this? (http://www1.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/cole-haan-air-stanton-waterproof-leather-chelsea-boots?ID=676845&cm_mmc=Google_PLA-_-cole+haan-_-34094109904-_-pcrid=21485269864&gclid=CJvF_dvG1LUCFQepnQodjD0A-A)

Paddock boots are something different.
Chelsea boots are jodhpur boots. Paddock boots traditionally have laces but in the equestrian world often now have zip closure in front instead of lace closure.
Thanks for the link; I still however cannot find much selection on the most common American shoe retailer websites, so they definitely don't seem to be as common in the online shops at least.
I may just go the route of many and purchase jodhpur boots from equestrian retailers as they have a broad selection at lower prices than many fashion shops, and I've spent years wearing equestrian footwear.

I thought I'd throw in my $0.02. I read this entire thread for research on comfortable boots, then ordered a few pairs in various models and price ranges before deciding. To my surprise, I really like the Aerosoles Speartint boots.
I've been wearing them to work a lot over the last month and even walking to lunch (~1 mile roundtrip) a couple times a week. They're very comfortable, though I added inserts for my plantar fascitis. They look great with jeans and slacks. And I got them on Amazon for $20. :) I don't expect them to last forever, but at $20, I'm going to order another pair to keep in the closet. I can't wait to take them on my trip to Ireland in April!

Funny- I got that catalog a couple months ago. Really must be starting a push to America! I couldn't find many reviews at the time - they're not cheap, but if they're comfortable and well-made, the price is fine - I just cannot evaluate without seeing them, or at least reading reviews about how they fit....
I assume (I hope...) they bought Footsmart's catalog list and that's how they got my name/address....

I am on my second pair of Blondo boots. I liked the the Blondo Valente (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/blondo-valente-waterproof-boot/3213584?origin=keywordsearch&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=Black&resultback=0) boots I got last year for my UK/Ireland trip I bought another pair. It was a leap of faith for me because I couldn't find anywhere in Dallas to try them on, so I ordered them from Nordstrom who has a great return policy where you can take it to the store instead of shipping it back. I got the Blondo Vida (http://www.6pm.com/blondo-vida-black-tucson-butterscotch-boaton?zfcTest=mat%3A1) boots from 6Pm on sale. Both pair of Blondo's broke in super fast, they are great walking boots and they are waterproof which helps while in UK and Ireland. I put a Walking Company insert in the boots to make them a little cushier. I found out about Blondo's on this board, I had never heard them before but I love them!

Were they from different lines? I wear one full size larger in their dressy (office shoe styled) line than in their casual sandals.
Sadly I fall in between sizes for Geox and they don't offer 1/2 sizes :( For something inexpensive and just good enough, I like Aerosoles. I am usually able to wait for a sale to get them at a decent price. They are really soft and flexible, but as a result don't offer much support. So it really depends on why your feet hurt. For when my feet hurt from lack of support, I go with Mephisto or Chacos depending on the situation.
