A friend flew EDI- LHR - EWR last week with Continental and BMI were able to check his luggage all the way through from Edinburgh as you would hope and expect.

I'm flying EDI - LHR - IAH - CUN in a couple of weeks, but my EDI flight is the night before, whereas his was on the same day. I am then on the 0930 to IAH.

Will bmi still be able to check my luggage all the way through from EDI given it's all on the same ticket? (I'm not sure yet if I want to, but want to consider the option anyway).

In my experience there is no overnight through checking of luggage at LHR, if you have an overnight connection through LHR you need to collect your luggage and recheck the following morning. In any case I wouldn't like the thought of my luggage lying overnight in the bowels of any airport.

If your routing is on one PNR you can check the luggage through.

Just bear in mind IAH is an oddity (US port of entry which allows through checking of bags to a non-US destination). I would be surprised if the check-in person at EDI was up to speed on this.

CO agents at Heathrow will be much more used to it.

Generally, I find that even if you have a connection in the US, agents in EDI will still check bags through to your final destination, and will usually remind you that you need to pick up your bags at your US port of entry and recheck them. If IAH does allow through-checking to a non-US destination (I can't comment on this), then I don't see why it should make much difference regarding the ability of an EDI agent to through-check, other than the fact that they may incorrectly tell you to recheck.

I'm aware of the IAH through checking - I asked a question about this to confirm a few weeks ago on the CO forum as I'd read about it on the CO site and didn't quite understand it.. They do have an arrangement where the bags don't need to be collected and you can use a theoretically shorter immigration line and then bypass customs (although you still have to go through security - you just bypass the bag collection and drop).

I don't think I actually would want my bags kicking about LHR overnight, and travelling with a 3yo, it probably is undesirable anyway. However as we are staying in the Yotel with it's minimal space, it was just something i was considering as an option.

Apparently its in the rules somewhere... airlines will not thru check luggage if its an overnight at LHR.

I was on a CX flight and required an overnight at LHR. CX agent had to check rules on her CRS and then adviced me that its BAA at LHR that prohibits the checking of bags even if its a legal connection if the flight is the next day.
