San Francisco - Good Hotel in San Francisco

If I buy a rail pass and decide one of my stops will be San Francisco, anyone know a good hotel that doesn't cost a fortune? I was last in SF for anything about 45 years ago, so I have no idea what the situation is. I do belong to AAA, so I guess I could get some guidebooks from them.

There is a rail pass on the west cost???
You need to give some details on what you want to do in SF length of stay and your price range - there are many options in Bay Area. In general Priceline offers the best value here.

And, if you're riding the rails, consider one of the outlying areas with easy access to San Francisco by BART (http://www.bart.org).
That said, don't overdo it in terms of trying to save money by staying in Pleasant Hill or something. If you can, splurge enough that you don't give up too much San Francisco time; Pleasant Hill isn't, really. Nor is Pleasanton.

If you are around on the weekend, there are some really nice hotels near the airport with very reasonable rates on the weekend - Hyatt, Marriott, Westin - would be my personal choices. You can take their free shuttle to the airport and get on BART very easily.

Im also looking for nice, clean and modern hotel something around and under 200$. It seems that accomodation is quite expensive in SFO and it's hard to find "bang-for-the-buck" deal. Im looking for Intercontinental Mark Hopkins but the price is quite high even with the family&friends discount according the pictures in tripadvisor. Nikko Hotel would be also great but the rate is a bit too much. Any ideas?
I also would like to know where to find good hotel deals. I have now tried with Expedia and glanced over hotwire and priceline but they seem little bit complicated and i don't like to play "hide and seek" with their "top secret hotel from area x starting at price x"?

that will also make a difference. DO you need to be right in Union Square? If not there may be better deals...
I would look at the Kimpton chain or Joie de Vivre chains for hotels just out of Union Sq -but still in SF

It's OK to spend $ if it makes you feel better. When I save $100-150/nt I am fine what you refer to as "hide and seek" but it's your call.
Keep an eye on travelzoo - they have decent specials from time to time.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions! Im planning to stay 10.september-13.september so it's saturday to tuesday. Intercontinental Hopkins would be 228$/night - can i get better value somewhere else? Clean, modern and location im after.
What about staying somewhere like Hilton near airport and using their free shuttle to/from BART-station? Too much hassle? Is the public transport really working?

If you want a rock-bottom price, you really should consider Priceline. Otherwise, you're more or less going to get what you pay for, though I suppose you could plug your dates into a booking engine and see what is being offered. The IC F&F rate you're looking at is probably a good bet, too; you might try other properties in the IC chain.

It depends on how much you value your time. You'd be looking at approximately an hour each way between your room and the City with that plan.

Yes! I have searched my dates via various sites. I came across this hotel: http://www.hotelunionsquare.com/index.html It seems to have great location and trendy atmosphere/decor. 188$/night.

Yes - 1hour is too much!

How does that rate compare to others? Seems like a lot for a hotel like that. Very good location, though.

The hotel is an old historic one which was very run down and has now been completely refurbished, so the rooms will be quite nice. Location is superb, better than the fancier hotels like the Four Seasons. Might be a bit noisy though. Anything better will cost twice as much (or more) and that location really works well for a tourist.

I pulled the trigger with Hotel Union Square. Location seems good and rooms quite modern! Thanks for everyone who provided information and tips! ^
