Does anybody know how many and what type of upgrades are in the packets for 2004? I'm going to make silver preferred but wonder if it is worth it to go for gold.

According to US's website, SP members receive 4 500-mile E-upgrades, GP members receive 8, and CP receive unlimited E-upgrades.

The other difference is 100% bonus miles instead of 50% on your flights, and the e-upgrades you get per 10K US miles flown (8 vs. 4). I believe the new member packet is 6 for Gold and 3 for Silver. Both have gotten two one-way Transatlantic upgrades in the previous packets.

The bigger difference will be with Star Alliance (*A) status. Silver will probably be *Silver, and Gold/Chairman's will probably be *Gold. *Gold get a lot of benefits throughout the *A network worldwide, including access to lounges in any airport worldwide (with a few exceptions affecting domestic-only travel). For more info, you can check the *A website or the *A thread on FlyerTalk.
