WASHINGTON, D.C., May 31, 2003 -- The Chief Executive Board of Star Alliance today unanimously approved the application of US Airways to join the world's largest airline alliance. The addition of US Airways significantly expands Star Alliance's network in the business hubs of the eastern United States and in the Caribbean.

"US Airways offers Star Alliance business and leisure passengers significant advantages," said Jaan Albrecht, chief executive officer, Star Alliance. "For business travelers, the addition of US Airways means unparalleled access to the most extensive airline network in the eastern United States; for leisure travelers, the expanded network also means more destinations in the Caribbean and Florida from which to choose."

The addition of US Airways will increase the number of airports served by the Star Alliance network from 700 to 771, while the number of countries served will grow to 133 from 128.

"Expanding the reach of our network through Star Alliance will create enormous benefits both for our customers and our business," said David N. Siegel, US Airways president and chief executive officer. "To Star Alliance's members and customers, US Airways brings value with our strong presence in the eastern United States, where 70 percent of all travel to Europe originates, as well as our growing presence in the Caribbean. Star Alliance customers entering the U.S. through our premier international gateway in Philadelphia will experience the nation's most modern international terminal, which just opened this month."

While no firm date has been set for US Airways' official entry into Star Alliance, it is anticipated that the carrier will become part of the world's leading airline alliance within the next nine to 12 months.

US Airways, based in Arlington, Virginia, is the largest carrier in the eastern United States and the seventh largest in the country. Its operations are concentrated in its hubs in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

The airline has more than 3,300 daily departures to cities in the United States, Canada and Europe, and flies to more destinations in the Caribbean than any other U.S. airline.

US Airways has been working with Star Alliance member airlines since it signed a code-sharing agreement with United Airlines in 2002 and recently signed a similar memorandum of understanding on code-sharing with Lufthansa German Airlines.

Glenn Tilton, chairman, president and chief executive officer of United Airlines, which sponsored US Airways' application, warmly welcomed US Airways into Star Alliance. "The United States is the largest single air travel market in the world, and the addition of US Airways provides a complementary service to our passengers," Tilton said. "Clearly anything that we can do to serve the growing needs of Star Alliance passengers in this country and around the world will benefit each of our member airlines."

US Airways serves 195 airports in 25 countries with a fleet of 279 aircraft. The airline employs more than 28,000 people and carried 54 million passengers in 2002.

Star Alliance was established in May 1997 as the first truly global airline alliance. Member airlines are Air Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, bmi, Lauda Air, Lufthansa German Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Spanair, Thai Airways International, Tyrolean Airways, United Airlines and VARIG Brazilian Airlines. LOT Polish Airlines will become a member in October 2003.

I'm a member in LH's frequent flyer program and am very much looking forward to trying out US Airways (it has been several years since my last flight with them) on a future RTW - especially interested in US Air's coverage of the Caribbean. Welcome to the Star Alliance! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

If you don't have status with US, how is award availability? I'm talking AMEX MR points to US here.

As great as this, the most discouraging part...

Does this mean we will finally be able to use our "e-upgrades" on member airlines (like United) rather then being forced to buy them?

Is the end of the CP benefits growing near?

I wouldn't hold your breath. United FFers can upgrade some LH itineraries but I don't think any other partners allow upgrades. Just accrual and redemption of [status] miles.

How many *A airlines currently fly into PHL?

All I can think of is LH. I wonder if this will be the catalyst for SK/OS to serve PHL from their hubs. Maybe ANA to NRT?

You are right, LH but don't forget UA http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif and AC (maybe not for long http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif)

This is bad news for those people that rushed to cash in all their USAirways miles thinking that they would be going under.

Way to go USAirways!

Just because US will be in Star Alliance
don't be foolish enough to think that PHL will be seeing other Star carriers. You have LH now and that will probably be it as US Airways will connect customers to other European carriers in the Alliance and UA will
be connecting them in the Pacific.
LH is the only star carrier to fly non-stop BOS to FRA and MUC..No US carrier is on the route..Could be the same out of PHL.

IF nothing else, I would imagine US srvice to and from LH hubs to be expanded. It would not surprise me to see FRA-PHL remain an A-330 and have FRA-CLT get upgraded to an A-330 from the 767. Also having PHL-MUC go to a 330 from a 767 would make sense as well.

Yes, but BOS isn't a * hub as PHL now is (or will soon be).

although its early to speculate if US will add any new Euro destinations (seeing as DUB and SNN just came online) I'd have to think Vienna, Austria, would be a high priority, given Austrian, Lauda, and Tyrolean are all *A and based in that country. interesting.

On one hand, United doesn't fly to Vienna or Copenhagen or Stockholm even though they are all Star Alliance hub airports. Instead, those carriers fly into United hubs of Washington-Dulles and Chicago-O'Hare and connect to the United domestic network from there. On the other hand, over 70% or so of transatlantic traffic originates east of the Miss. River, where US does a terrific job of picking up traffic.

I bet this won't take a full year to implement -- US wants this just as much as their customers. They've been working this deal for several months already, so let's hope they can pull it off sooner than later.

I wonder if there is a large Asian presence in Philly? Wonder if there is enough to support an Asian *A to start operations there?

The Philadelphia MSA is 4% Asian--just under 200,000 out of nearly 5 million. The largest pieces of that are from Mainland China and from India, neither home to a * carrier, followed by Korea (suggesting that Asiana might be the best bet). Pittsburgh's MSA is 1% Asian, and while I don't have MSA-level numbers, the city of Charlotte is 3% Asian.

I'm not holding out much hope for service straight from any hub, but a codeshare on the transcons into LAX is certainly possible.

Dear COCHROACH,

We are proud to announce that on May 31, 2003, the Chief Executive Board of the Star Alliance unanimously approved US Airways' application to join the world's largest airline alliance.

As a Dividend Miles member, you will have the opportunity to earn and redeem miles for travel to 771 airports and 133 countries served by 17 of the world's finest carriers. Plus, Dividend Miles Preferred members will enjoy recognition and benefits when traveling on any of the Star Alliance member airlines.

This is another step towards our goal to provide a seamless network and greater access to the world to our customers. Our partnership with United has already brought Dividend Miles members enhanced benefits and award opportunities. Our next major partnership with Lufthansa German Airlines will begin late this year.

While we anticipate the benefits of Star Alliance will commence in the first quarter of 2004, we will continue to keep you informed of our progress and launch plans.

With this wonderful news, it's now clear that Dividend Miles is a better program than UA's Mileage Plus. For the lowest tier member, UA offers only a 25% flight mile bonus while US offers 50%. Also, US still has the 20K off-peak domestic awards. In addition, US offers occasional monthly award discounts to certain destinations. All of this, plus the capability to redeem to any Star Alliance destination, just like UA. And of course US miles seem a safer bet at the moment than UA miles.

US becomes a part of M&M on Oct. 26.

This is more important than * in my opinion. Check out the M&M program. It has a lot to offer.

1000 miles per segment
UG almost any paid fare on LH/OS.
25% increase for status members
100% increase for business class(125 w/status)
200% increase for first class(250 with status)

So minimum mileage w status in first is 3750.

If you are a SEN, you get into all * lounges with a ticket, including RCC without membership.

So this is not yet a 'reciprocal' arrangement? We have not heard anything on the US end about details on flying LH - but it just seems really odd that one of the two partners would start before the other. The US/UA lineup had specific start dates, etc, and they were announced at the same time by both carriers.
