Chicago - Kuma's Corner - how's the neighborhood?

I'm visiting Chicagoland this weekend, and my 18 yr old wants to try Kuma's corner (http://www.kumascorner.com/).
I won't have a car, but it looks to be about a mile from the Addison Blue Line stop.
Should I be concerned about walking around in this area?

You're better off getting off at Belmont, it's closer. The walk is fine.
You can also take the 77-Belmont bus. It stops right in front of the station going eastbound (westbound pulls into the station) and will drop you right across the street from Kuma's (Francisco is the cross street/stop on the bus). 25 cents for the transfer if you've already ridden the Blue Line.
Don't go too late, no minors (and in this case, minor means under 21) after 10pm.

perfect! Thanks!
I was following the train tracks on Google Maps to find the closest stop. I completely missed the Belmont stop.

Ooh, I'll have to add this place to my List of Restaurants to Visit Before I Move. ^

After Addison, the blue line isn't in the expressway median anymore. It goes into a subway for a couple stops, then is back above ground, but along Milwaukee Ave, a bit west of the expressway. You didn't see Belmont because it's underground :) If you didn't already find it, the stop is at Belmont/Kimball, just west of the expressway. There's a small building with a bus turnaround.

I have eaten there about 24 times - and had to wait about 20 of those times. As the weather warms up, more people get out and Kuma's gets busy. It's worth going to but try to pick an 'off' time.

I've not been to Kuma's, but I have been to The Lockdown. Friends who have been to both claim that The Lockdown is as good as or better than Kuma's, without the wait.

IMO this is the best burger I've found in the city. The wait gets annoying, though.

he seemed to have liked it: And once you get out there, you’ll have to wait for your table. And waiting at (or near) the bar is exquisite torture because there’s a line up of folks at the bar chowing down on the best hamburgers and macaroni and cheese you’ll ever come across.
Best? not in my book but as you know, especially with food, YMMV.
missy, did you end up going last weekend? (the blogger was drinking, can't be your son)
Thanks for this thread, as it reminded me that we went all winter without taking advantage of Kuma's wintertime joy. TAKEOUT! They only do takeout when the patio is closed. Rectified that on Saturday. Tried a new combo in the mac, andoiulle and roasted red peppers, worked out very well.

We didn't end up going. But it looks like my son will be in Great Lakes for the next several weeks, so he may venture there on his own.

Did he just graduate from RTC at Great Lakes? It's not too bad to hop on the Metra at the base and get into the city. Get off at Ravenswood and catch a cab to Kuma's is pretty easy.

He graduated a little over a month ago. Waiting for a medical waiver for his sinuses to clear before he goes to A School in PNS.
I'll let him know about the metra/taxi option

gotcha. was wondering if the graduation was the reason you were in. My cousin went through RTC last summer and then had his next school at Great Lakes as well, so I got to see him a couple times after the graduation as well as the graduation itself.

It's possible to do it via bus as well, but it takes two buses to do it. It's about 3 miles from Ravenswood, so the cab should be about $10 with tip (maybe another buck if he has 2-3 friends with him).
