Does US waive any of the limits on checked baggage for elite FF members? I am UA 1K and was checking in in DEN with US. When the agent saw that I wanted to check 3 bags (golf clubs included) he stated that it would be $80 for the third bag. Would they have waived this if I was CP on US?
I, of course simply carried on two bags instead of one, and checked two.

I am gold on US and they don't waive the baggage limits. I am surprised you weren't stopped with the 2 pieces on the plane.

Why are you surprised? I see it all the time.
On every flight, there's the people who carry their big roll-on, their smaller roll-on, and their purse/computer bag.

I ended up with a standard rollaway and a small backpack/laptop bag (albeit with no computer on this trip)that fits conveniently under the seat in front of me. As far as I am concerned, this is allowable under all airlines carry-on policies, not to mention the TSA.
FYI - United allows exemptions from some baggage limits for elites, thus my question.
I think US is still at 70lbs..i got nailed for 56lbs on DL Shuttle the other day..I picked 6lbs out and put it in my hand cary.
