US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Plastic Knives on Planes, Metal in PHL Envoy Lounge

I flew PHL to CDG in Envoy back on the 16th of July and found it a bit funny that they had metal knives available in the Envoy Lounge in the new Terminal A West. Still plastic on the planes, but it seems that the metal in the lounge defeats the purpose, since it's past security.
Personally, I think the no metal knives policy is a bit ridiculous and useless, but interesting to find this, nonetheless.

Metal knives have been allowed past security (and on planes) by the TSA now for several months - as long as they aren't pointed, sharp steak knives. Rounded, butter, not real sharp metal bladed knives are ok. And most metal airline cutlery fits that description.
And I agree with you. Norm Mineta's ill-advised ban on all metal airplane cutlery (announced September 12, 2001) was infantile lunacy at its peak. As was most of the great sharp and pointy object search.

I wasn't aware that these types of knives were now allowed. Too bad most airlines have continued to use the plastic. I just returned from a trip flying BA First class between PHL and LHR and they had ALL plastic--forks, knives, and spoons. Same was true for my Concorde flight back in May. And, of course, US still had the plastic on the 16th and the 24th in Envoy. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I guess it's cheaper to create more trash than wash silverware.

The UK govt requires all plastic cutlery on flights to and from the UK, unfortunately. UK authorities are even more boneheaded, apparently, and have not rescinded anything. Definitely worth smuggling some from the Envoy lounge. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Travelscholar, welcome back from First Class on BA! Trip report coming? (Whenever anyone asks me about my recent Concorde trip I point them to your Concorde trip report www.travelscholar.com/concorde (http://www.travelscholar.com/concorde) . I think yours is the last word on this soon-to-be-grounded plane.)

I was talking to an FA in F recently that thought it was an embarassment that they didn't have glassware or metal utensils.
Not that it would have mattered anyway -- the food for that flight (it was an IFC flight) in F was smaller than what I used to get post-9/11 in Y. And all in plastic. It was so pathetic I actually pulled out my camera and took a photo.
