My wife and I have Dividend Miles accounts that have been completely or mostly dormant for over 3 years. So far the miles have not expired. What are the program rules for expiration of miles? Do they ever expire, and what is needed to keep them from expiring?

In theory, after three years of dormancy, they should just disappear.

If you have miles from a few years ago (not sure how many years ago - maybe 1998?), they were "immortal"; i.e., they would never expire. Of course, as you used your miles, they were the ones that got used up first.

Check out your account on USAir.com. Rent a car or buy some flowers - put the miles in your account - see what happens. According to the rules, any activity at all is sufficient to protect your total mileage balance for another three years.

Edited for spelling and other secret stuff. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

From the Web site -
Beginning January 1, 2000, miles earned will not expire as long as any mileage earning or redemption activity occurs in your account within 36 months of the last account activity. Each qualifying activity on or after January 1, 2000, will extend the expiration date of all unexpired miles in your account for 36 months from the date of the qualifying activity. Dividend Miles earned through December 31, 1999, are not subject to expiration.

Thank you. As the miles in question were accured prior to 2000, it appears that they should be safe.

Looking for information on mileage expiration, and see that it appears to be 3 years after the date of last activity on the account. Any way for me to see online the date of last activity?

You could log on to US Airways.com onto your DM account. But it only goes back so far. You would need to call the DMSC otherwise. 800.428.1775

So if I had 200K miles in 1999 and now have 400k but have burned 300k in the those years. how many 'immortal' miles to I have? What if I burned the 300 in 2000, down to 0,, and built up again? What if I burned them all last month?

FIFO? LIFO?

You have what you have -- all the "mortal" miles are protected by the 3 year rule -- rent a car, charge something to your USAir Visa, take a flight, etc. From that point on, every mile is protected by the 3 year rule.

I wish USAir itself was protected by a 3-year rule (I'd settle for three months about now :( )

I do not like to "spend" $ to extend validity of miles. Maybe you can donate amiles and extend the validity. I usually do this for my children. However, the bigger fear is the expiration of US Airways!
