Washington D.C. (including Baltimore) - Can you go in the Concorde at NASM (Udvar-Hazy Center)?

there are a few things i really kick myself for not doing in my life.
one of them is not going to berlin before the fall of the wall. second is not having driven the nurburgring during the 27 years i lived in europe. and the third is not having flown the concorde.
the berlin chance is gone. i could rent a car and drive the 'ring. and finally, although i might not be able to fly in concorde, can i at least go inside the one at the national air and space museum? or do i just get to walk around it?
one other thing is that i see that the schedules for the airport shuttle don't connect well from the center of town. should i take a bus to the airport and then take a taxi to the museum? or should i just rent a car downtown? i don't feel like wasting 2 hours each way to and from the museum. how much would a taxi cost from downtown? just searching for a good way to get there.

Sorry, no onboard access for the NASM's Concorde. (You can, however, tour the one on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle (http://www.museumofflight.org/concorde); I highly recommend a visit.) I share your first and third regrets, FWIW.
There's a bus from the airport to the museum that runs about every 45 minutes to an hour (http://www.vatransit.org/); sorry for the overload of Flash at that site. Take either the Metro 5A bus to IAD from L'Enfant or Rosslyn ($6) or Metro to West Falls Church and then take the Washington Flyer shuttle (http://www.washfly.com/flyer_bus_schedule.htm) from there to IAD ($10 each way, $18 roundtrip).

Thanks so much for the Seattle info. I recently moved to Vancouver BC and was unaware of that museum. Will have to take a trip down there ASAP.
And thanks for the transportation info too. I've read that this is quite a schlep and was hoping for the secret magic carpet ride.

I also live in Vancouver and can tell you the museum is well worth a visit - The "Boeing Barn" is fascinating and you can indeed board the Concorde.

If arriving into DCA and the cost of a rental isn't too much, I'd consider the car rental over the bus. Bus is easy enough, but it is time consuming and you'd get more out of your day to just drive yourself. Just make sure you travel outside the worst of the rush hour, as the rush hour is fairly miserable.

thanks for that. we'll be coming in by train from NY. i'm thinking car rental will be the most efficient.

I haven't looked at rental costs in awhile but believe union station c anbe pricey, you might want to look st the local offices or even dca for comparison to decide whee to do your pickup and drop off. It also may make sense ti pick up outside of downtown to st least avoid traffic in that area

Since we'll be staying a few days I was planning to pick up a car in town, drive to the museum, and then drop off the car on the way back. I saw prices of around $50 plus gas and parking so it isn't a cheap solution but if it saves a few hours it might be worth it.
