Argentina - Argentine's Reception of Afro/Black Tourists

Hi again all!

As I previously mentioned in a separate thread, it will be my first time traveling to Argentina in December, however, I was curious to know the reception I will receive as a black tourist, particularly as a young Afro-Caribbean/black female in my 20s. I know Argentina has a small population of Afro-Argentines but I've read that I should expect to feel like an alien/outsider whilst there. I have even read of some black female tourists being sexually accosted by Argentines.

It is my hope that this will not necessarily be to true for my experience, however, any honest feedback of what I should expect would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi CoilyKinks

As someone who visits Buenos Aires several times a year and frequently travel with black American women friends, I can tell you from experience that many Argentines will assume that you're either Brazilian or Carribean. Brazilians are all over Argentina these days because it's so cheap for them do so and the Argentines LOVE Brazilians. And the Carribean isn't all that far from Argentina and many travel from there to see and visit as tourists, just like folks from North America.

Though many Argentines are of southern European background, and maybe you've experienced something not-so-nice there, you'll be in South America and their mindset will be far more positive.

Have fun and let us know how well you've learned the Tango when you get back!

Of those visitors to Argentina who identify their ethnic heritage with Africa and/or any parts of Asia (including much of the Middle East, South/Central/East Asia), the reception in Argentina is generally as good as or (more usually) better than it would be in Europe or Asia. This would include how relevant Brazilian visitors (including Brazilians of African ethnic heritage), to Argentina are treated as well.

Enjoy your trip there. People of the background you mentioned with whom I've been in Argentina have had a great time. And even by the measure of bigotry that usually plays out at the door of some nightlife places or restaurant seating in so-called "open society" places, Argentina deserves ^^ for being far better than most all such places in being welcoming.

5 or more years ago, you certainly would have stood out on the basis of your ethnic appearance far more than is the case now. But even back then, the reception in Argentina has generally been great in the manner I mentioned above.

Just to echo other comments here - this is not something you should be worried about at all. Have fun planning your trip :)

Yes no problem whatsoever.

It is a country full of people with very mixed ethnic background so just come and enjoy.

I traveled to Argentina in 2009. I am a black american female and at the time I was 27. I didn't have any many problems, just LOTS of stares. Not sure if was my hair (I'm natural and wear a big puff or sometime curly fro) or what, but people were gawking. I know they exist, but I didn't see many Afro-anybody while exploring the city. I also had a few unwanted solicitations, while dressed in jeans, chucks and sweater.

It wasn't a big deal to me. Just wanted you to be aware and not be surprised if it happens to you.

Have a blast and will definitely look forward to your report when you get back!

Hey Absolute, I'm also a natural head here! :D :D. I heard similar stories to your own. Maybe they were just curious? ;)

I'll PM you, if that's okay!
