Ok NOTHING will make us a real forum like getting together, so I have a proposal....Lifetime is doing indoor triathlons, a series now and some in the spring. You do NOT have to be an LTF member to do them.
They are timed, which means you start together and finish together which makes it less intimidating. The format is:
10 minutes in the pool
30 minutes on the bike
20 minutes on the treadmill.
They are held all over the country.
I say we pick one and JUST DO IT!!!!!!!

Great idea, but I'd like to suggest an alternative. It's possible this crowd might be interested in more than one.
There are relay races all over the country, almost always in scenic locations and great travel destinations. One popular series is the Ragnar Relay series... a team of 12 runners covers 200 miles (each runner does 3 legs from 3 to 8 miles). I'll be doing the Ragnar Del Sol in Phoenix this weekend and hope to hook up with another FTer while there.
I bet we could field a team of 12 FTers for one of the Ragnar races. There are 15 of them from west coast to east coast to midwest... thoughts? Interest? I've even got the team name picked out: The "Mileage Runners". Heh.

WOW you are even more adventurous than I am. I was trying to stick with something that would put people on a more even footing ability wise. You are obviously a serious runner, I would love to be but am not yet, I still do a 20 minute mile. I would LOVE to do a Ragnar but no team would want me at my pace.
My thought with the tri is that you can go as slow or as fast as you want and still everyone starts and finishes together. I did one last year, I came in last at my club but that wasnt obvious to til the scores were posted.
What I would REALLY like to do, is the warrior dash, but again not there physically!
I think we should look at multiple events and always use the name the mileage runners, I love it!!!!!!!

I vote for the one at the IAD location since I already signed up to do that one in October.

Relay races do sound interesting too since I run a decent amount.

Oh, Ragnars cater to a wide range of abilities. Unless you're one of the "elite" teams looking to win the thing, most teams are happy whatever your ability, and it's more fun than your usual race because you have a built in cheering squad (your van) over the course of the race. And they're all scenic/good travel destinations.

I'll admit 20 is a bit long, but I've seen plenty of runners at the 13-15 pace. While I had hoped to do a 10m pace (slow in comparison to serious runner) I'm trying to kick some bronchitis and am honestly hoping just to finish at 11-12 pace this weekend. And the team's fine with that.

So the goal is to get in as much of each within the time period?
How do you (or how would you) compare/weight the distances accomplished in each?
To me, 10 min in the pool is barely splashing around and getting wet. But for someone else, they may struggle to do even a few hundred meters. Of course I'd love the swimming to be much more heavily weighted :D
I'm assuming you use a Lifecycle, or some other stationary bike? What setting do you put it on? Someone working hills would have a much tougher time than someone doing a flat course. And the same can be said for treadmill.
I don't belong to Lifetime (I took the cheap option with 24 Hour), but there are a couple that would be convenient, if we wanted to do this.

I believe the 2011 system is
- 2 points per pool length
- 2 points per "mile" on bike
- 18 points per mile on treadmill
The trip computers for the bikes are left at factory defaults, so people have maintained a 60pmh pace during the competitions that have already completed this year, so a high cadence bike leg will be an advantage to those that can maintain it.

Sounds like fun. I can do everything but the pool - when I swim I look like I'm drowning and little kids laugh at me.
Darn. There aren't any locations in NC and my schedule is booked with all my 1/2 marathons so I don't really want to travel elsewhere for this.
Maybe next year!

I think some of the folk in the exercise thread in Omni meet up - for marathons
The mods are checking w/ the 'regulars' in that thread about moving it over to this forum, so there might be some chances for folk meeting up there. And I know right now there's a thread in Community Buzz re: a Runners Do.
Cheers.

Because I'd have to buy a bike? :D
This is me sticking my toe into the pool of triathlons... we'll see how it goes.

Ok I am willing to commit to the IAD indoor if others are. If we get a few people to say yes I will start an official thread for it.
To answer some questions asked...
1) pace of others, it ranges, these are really set up well for any ability. If you go to the official website http://www.indoortri.com/ and look at the results page you can see the ones that have gone on so far this year and how people are pacing.
2) you do NOT have to be a LTF member to do these
3) Yes I am bummed there is not one in NC also, wanted to do one with a friend who lives there. LTF only has one club in NC but a little suprised they didnt host one this year
4) The bike is a spinning bike.
5) What resistance you use, on bike or treadmill, is up to you. None is required so most people use none on the bike and keep the incline on the treadmill flat. I personally walk faster on a treadmill at a slight negative incline (less feeling I am flying backwards off the stupid thing) so I do mine at -1.5.
6) Scoring, again see the website, http://www.indoortri.com/ but it is based on how far you go in the set periods of time and are rank ordered, points are based on the ordering.
Personally I anticipate doing 2-3 of these this year, one here in MN in May, this one in IAD in October and maybe one in Texas. Truth I anticipate coming in last in all three, I am NOT a speed person (I can work out for LONG LONG periods of time but not fast) but I have asked my trainer to help me prep this year so we will see how I do.
Any other questions just let me know, I did this last year with a group of friends and LOVED it, this year I am getting a slower start due to feeling really insecure about my body but looking to get back into it. Hopefully you guys can help.
