I'm headed to Cozumel for the first time this week and was wondering if anyone knows of any good flea markets there? Not looking for a tourist trap kind of place, but something a little more authentic that the locals might frequent.

Not sure about Cozumel specifically but it might be useful to know that what you are looking for is called a "tianguis" (say "tee-an-geese") in Mexican Spanish. The word tianguis originates from the Nahuatl language which is the language of the Aztecs and is still spoken as a first language by many people in certain parts of Mexico. A tianguis is kind of an open air market combined with a garage sale on steroids. Bargaining is essential.

Ask at your hotel if they know of any nearby tianguis and when they are open. These usually spring up overnight on a street or streets, last all day, then disappear at night often returning on the same day each week.

All of downtown is a market. You can get good prices on gold and silver. But know the spot prices before you go. Gold you buy by the gram. 18 carat gold is 75% gold. The spot price for pure gold is $$$/Troy Ounce. Divide by 31 to get $$$/gram for 24-carat gold. Multiply by .075 and you have the price for 18-carat.

The amount you pay over the per gram price is what you think of the workmanship of the piece.

The cruise ship pier on Coz has cheapened the goods offered in the market. Cheap tourist crap from China drives out the genuine from local craftsmen. Still, it is fun to try. If fancy watches or electronics are your cup of tea, know the price or take a internet enabled device to look it up.

Isn't the multiplier .75 (75%)?

Thanks for the algorithm - I'm headed to Dubai in a couple of weeks and this will come in handy when shopping at the gold souk.
