My partner will be flying discount economy LHR-EZE via MAD next week with lots of luggage and the standard allowance is 1 piece up to 23kg!

I can't find any details on Iberia's website re additional allowances for OW Sapphires and 2 calls to Iberia have resulted in different answers:-

1 bag free up to 32kg
2 bags up to 23kg free

Any OW Sapphire have any recent experience with this? If it makes a difference the Sapphire status is with AA. Thanks.

BA Emeralds get an extra piece of baggage on cheap fares, but only on North American routes. All others must pay for overweight/extra piece: http://www.iberia.com/OneToOne/v3/product.do?cntCat=Productos/EQUIFR&cntId=beneficios_eqp_plus&isPopup=true

Note that it's cheaper to prepay your overage fees online when you check in.

Since you can check in at the BusinessPlus line, my experience has been that they overlook extra baggage or overweight baggage. But of course there's no guarantee, so pre-paying is wise if the contents are vital and cannot be left behind at the airport. Once my partner and I checked in 4 bags in total: 21, 24, 28 and 31 kgs!! No charge or even mention of the weight. Huge relief, thanks Iberia!

Oh wow, just read the IB free baggage allowance page, and it appears that now for USA destinations, only one bag can be checked for free on regular economy tickets. This must have changed since last March when we flew with 2 each. Bummer!

I have tweeted IB's Customer Service (they provide a MUCH better service than phone or e-mail). I will try to post their reply tomorrow. Anyway, the 32Kgs option seems unaccurate. Even Business Plus customers are allowed 23Kgs per bag maximum (3 bags, but 23Kgs per bag).

I told you their twitter Customer Service is awesome (honestly, they seem to work for another company). They already answered. You have the same benefits of a IB Plus Gold Status. That is:

Access to VIP Lounge (If she has some time tell her to grab a bit here before the flight, the Lounge is excellent, and all food/drinks are complimentary)

1 additional bag up to 23Kgs. This means she can check in 2 bags for free. No overweight as long as the total does not exceed 46Kgs (she can take a bag of 27Kgs and another one of 19Kgs).

Be aware that an additional third bag would mean a "mere" 110€, but overweight up to 32Kgs on one of the bags checked is only 60€.

Thanks so much for taking the time to check this Spainontheair. Unfortunately he checked in this afternoon and was charged 120€: 60€ for the bag weighing 32kg and another 60€ for the second bag. He tried unsuccessully to get them to waive some of the charge given that he had been misinformed by the Iberia phone agent but they were adamant that OW Sapphire meant no additional baggage allowances :(

At least the bags were checked all the way thru to EZE so there won't be any further charges from LAN on his subsequent flight
