Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus - TG F vs UA F to HKG - help me decide

As part of my mini-RTW reward booking, I have to add in a flight from HKT-BKK. My options are:

1) HKT-(BKK-HKG) - in TG F, but old B747
2) HKT-(SIN-HKG) - in UA F, new seats

I know hands down the UA seats are better. But given my flight would be at 8am from BKK-HKG, how much of the ground TG F benefits can I really make use of? Service and food will likely be better on TG compared to UA..but the UA F suites look so nice.

What would you do?

If you plan to sleep, pick UA for the nice bed. If you plan to be awake, pick TG for the better food and particularly drinks (if you go for that sort of thing -- and yes I know it's 8am, but it's 5pm somewhere).

Go for TG. They have much better food, drinks, service and incredible ground services and lounges. It is worth going with TG just for the ground services and the spa. The TG option is also much shorter.

I once chose UA F over NH/OZ C ICN-NRT because the seat looked better and it was the worst decision ever. Food was terrible, service was almost non-existent and it just didn't stand out as a good experience. TG F however is an experience!

And HKT-SIN is with Silkair. If this is an award then it is not bookable.

If you are just connecting in BKK that may eliminate some of the perks of TG F ground service (i.e. check-in). But maybe I don't quite understand what you are doing. Are your options HKT-BKK-HKG on TG or HKT-SIN-HKG with the leg to HKG on UA but the leg to SIN on some other carrier?

Having flown both relatively recently I would pick UA new F. The IFE is WAY better. How much are you really going to be eating or drinking? And anyway I found the UA F class food to be fine on my flight from ZRH-IAD last Nov. The UA suite has a lot more storage too. Seat comfort is a toss up or maybe the slightest of edges to TG because it feels a bit wider and a window seat is actually oriented for easier view out the window. the UA suites are angled towards the aisle.

There's also something to be said for what I suppose is a more direct itinerary via BKK rather than going down to SIN and then back up to HKG. What is the difference in travel times, schedule, etc? I think I would probably pay more attention to that since it's not really a very long-haul.

Take TG. You might get an a/c switch in your favor.

TG F!
Try to get a connection of 2-3h so that you have enough time for a 1h oil massage in the spa in BKK! ;)

Take TG. The F ground service in BKK is great and you'll enjoy the massage. There's always a chance you'll get an a/c swap to one of the new config 747s. Even if not, the older style F seats are extremely comfortable.

As for it being 5pm somewhere, it's 8am when your TG flight leaves BKK and this almost certainly means you will not have to share the Dom as others will not be drinking ;-)

UA may have a fabulous first and business class seat right now, but their service is still as bad as ever. Sometimes you'll get a great crew, but often times you'll get old battleaxes who just don't care.

Maybe I do not understand the question, but as far as I know, UA does not serve Phuket with any flight, and the only UA flight to/from BKK is through Narita, Japan.

BKK-HKG or SIN-HKG are 2 hour flights, so not much time to enjoy F.
Plus for UA:
- UA seats are better but you wont have much time to sleep. And TG old seat is still OK for a short sleep. TG will have no avod or movie, while UA will have avod.
Plus for TG:
- transit in BKK is great. You will be buggied and escorted thru security and immigration (supposedly you will overnight in BKK /SIN).
- UA has only one flight departing at an awfull time from SIN (06:40), TG is a bit more reasonable (08:00). TG usually have another flight with F in the late afternoon, so you could connect from HKT same day. If there is a problem with the flight/ac, TG will easily get another plane or reroute you on a later flight, UA will not.

To me, it is a no-brainer for TG.

Ok everyone, thanks for the responses! I'll go with TG!!!

To clarify, I was thinking of flying HKT to SIN/BKK the night before and stay overnight..so its not really a connection. I dont care about AVOD for such a short and if you all say the F seats are alright for a short snooze, i'll go with the 8am out of BKK.

I also support the Thai flight. The seats might be old but they are super comfortable. I slept solid for hours on my fligth last week from PEK-BKK.
