US Airways joins Star Alliance

16 April 2003

FRANKFURT - US Airways, the seventh-largest American airline, is to join the Star Alliance code-sharing consortium, according to published remarks Wednesday by Lufthansa's future chief executive, Wolfgang Mayrhuber.

He told the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the 16 existing members of the alliance were likely to vote at a May 30 meeting in New York on admitting US Airways. Another US airline, United, is already in the grouping.

"We can well imagine US Airways in the Star Alliance," said an airline spokeswoman cautiously, when approached for comment on Wednesday. "It's entirely possible that the topic will be discussed at the May 30 meeting. But no decision has been taken yet."

Mayrhuber told the newspaper he saw no problem in the alliance having two U.S. members because they had different regional focuses.

"This would extend the network and improve the Star Alliance coverage of the United States," the spokeswoman said.

US Airways, which is dominant in the eastern United States, ended two weeks ago a period where it was under protection from creditors.

Last August it became the first US airline to open insolvency proceedings in the slump following the September 11 terror attacks. United, the world's second-largest airline, is still operating under protection.

It's about time! If they didn't join, the ff program wouldn't be much better than the Midwest (formerly Midwest Express) / Frontier program! That program also suffers from few partners, though AA is joining them. I should be too critical because I have Midwest Miles.

I am totally unfamiliar with the star alliance but am a frequent us flyer. What would ths mean? That I could earn us miles when flying other airlines in the star alliance?

Yes, and if you were Gold/Chairmans status with US you could get Star Alliance Gold access to lounges. Also priority check in/boarding etc.

And you could redeem US miles on any of these airlines to any of the destinations they serve:

Air Canada
Air New Zealand
All-Nippon Airways (ANA)
Asiana Airlines
Austrian Airlines Group
British Midland (bmi)
Lufthansa
Mexicana Airlines
Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS)
Singapore Airlines
Spanair
Thai Airways International
United Airlines
Varig Brazilian Airlines

Check out all kinds of cool stuff (including a fabulous screen saver showing every Star flight in real time on a map of the world) at http://www.staralliance.com

You could also deposit your miles in LH M&M, which is very different from US & UA mileage programs. It is particularly preferable if you fly business or first class.

To find the advantages do a search on Rudi in UA and LH forums.

The two major advantages is that biz and first miles credit as 250% and 375% status miles of actual flight miles, and that almost any LH fare is upgradeable.

My continuing big question is when can you use US Gold status to upgrade domestically on UA, as was announced as a planned benefit of the marketing agreement.

This was announced several weeks ago. We can now cross upgrade on the other airline on the day of departure. We need to buy upgrades for use on the other carrier ($40/piece I think), which is a nice compromise.

Day of departure only...no status preference...different than base level UA members?
