I can't keep track anymore ... what's the policy on stand-by for a standard award ticket now? I can get an award ticket for the destination and day I want, but only on the last flight out for the evening and I'd like to try and stand-by for earlier flights ...

Beckles,
I think as long as there is award seats available, you are OK to standby on a same-day flight. That's what happened to me in January, anyway. Things may have changed, though.

I don't remember a policy change, but I did this in August without any problems (PIT-YUL). If I remember correctly, the flight was open enough and I was just issued a boarding pass instead of the standby papers.

I was re-booked into K class, but no mileage. Always worth a shot.

It's booked in "Y," (or was) so you should be able to stand by with not problem.

Failing that, as a CP, you can't re-deposit free of charge and get on the flight you want, provided there is space and you do it early enough (4 or 6 hours, I'd imagine).

None of us can keep up anymore, so why not call US Airways and ask. Since you are a CP, a good CP agent should check and provide you with an accurate answer. If you don't get a real agent who seems to care (happening more and more) or really like playoff hockey and basketball, make it a best outta seven series.

If there were award seats available, I'd book the flight I wanted in the first place to begin with ...

You can still change standard awards around without penalty. I did it with my family of four back in February, and those were booked using the off-peak awards. As long as they have a seat, they'll let you have it.

D'oh! Hanging around the UA crowd (standard vs saver awards in their parlance) is rotting the brain.

I would not hold out hope for standby on a standard award. YMMV, of course.

I was going to book a UA award ticket using my US miles. I had asked if I could standby for an earlier flight on UA. She said if it was a US ticket, you could but not on the UA ticket.

Beckles,
People's award travel plans change all the time, just as yours may. It's not unreasonable to think that just because there are not seats available today, that there won't be seats available in the future when people cancel or change plans.

I did it Wednesday at 1830 on DCA-BOS. There were only 5 seats in Y according to the Japanese site. However, when I checked in at the club ~50 minutes prior to departure the kind woman gave me a confirmed seat.

I am doing the reverse tomorrow, hopefully. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

How do you do a 'standard award' and only book it on the outbound leg and not the return leg? I thought you had to book both?
