This is a gadget question! I dont know about rentals but if you posted here I assumed he is flying into LHR (not LGW on US Air) on UA as a US codeshare. UA (and AA for that matter) come into LHR at terminal 3. There is a store called Link in the departures area of terminal 3 that sells cell phones with prepaid SIM cards in them. You can buy the phone with some time on it and buy cards to add time (money really) to the phone. The phones are relatively cheap and the price of calls is often MUCH less than on rental phones. It depends on how frequently he plans using it but for a week or more with moderate use it might very well be cheaper to buy one. There are no monthly fees and the account stays active if you use it every six months (depending on the carrier). If he will just be in England, Virgin Mobile has good coverage and charges just 20 pence per minute for calls to the States. The phones are typically under 100 pounds. The Virgin Mobile web site will show phones and their prices. also theor email customer service is good at answering questions. I bought a Vodafone handset and SIM a few years ago and used it all over it all over Europe. I recently bought a Virgin Mobile SIM card to use in that phone because the rates are much cheaper for international calls. He should consider it depending on use. As to rental, most US carriers have some form of rental arrangement when overseas. He might check with his current carrier.
