Starwood Preferred Guest - Need to change date: any chance of grandfathering a non-peak rate during peak season

I booked 3 nights in the Westin Rome during May 21-24 (or so) at 12,000 points per night back in December but now I need to change it to May 28-June 1 but the current rate is 16,000 points per night as they reintroduced peak season award points.

Any chance of me calling in to make the change and them keeping the old rate? At least for the first 3 nights (and maybe 16,000 for the new 4th night)?

Probably a long shot but maybe worth a try.

A very, very long shot. To do this, your best bet would be to go directly to the hotel.

Why should they? Wouldn't everyone then book dummy low-season dates and then ask for the change?

you missed the point. my current reservation is during peak season. but when i booked it back in december they had no such thing as "peak rates" so thats why they took 12k points. if someone were to book may 21-24 right now they would get charged 16k points even though i was charged 12k points.

It was specifically announced that you need to book before Jan 10th to enjoy "no peak" rates. It cannot be changed now as dates you are looking for are coded in the system as 16K (analogy -- same week $$ rates could vary significantly and if you have a advanced booking for $100 a night to change to another date may cost you significantly more or less). Same idea is category change. 2 years ago I wanted to shorten my stay at a hotel from 8 to 5 nights. Meanwhile, hotel went from Cat 2 to 4. I had a difficult experience.
I agree with mahasamatman -- call the hotel, you chances with CS are single digits.

And do it quickly -- mostly likely Westin will go back to Cat 6 on March 1st which may complicate matters even further.;)

Yeah your analogy is the reason they probably will not accomodate me. On the other hand even despite rates varying every day the points are constant for months at a time. So it's at least worth a call or two and maybe an email. Tough pill to swallow to waste 16k points that could have been avoided if I had planned things out better better (4k extra * 4 nights and I don't have time to take advantage of the free 5th night)
