Mexico - Beach camping near CUN and points south and scooter rentals

I have searched but not been able to find very good information on this. Has anyone ever rented a moped / scooter in Cancun? I have found two motorcycle rental places but assume you would need a motorcycle endorsed driver's license to be able to rent from those places. One of them explicitly states that you do need a motorcycle license to rent from them.

Since I don't have one I am interested in renting a scooter.

My other question is, has anyone ever beach camped south of Cancun, down towards Tulum or points in between? Or barring that stayed in any of what appear to be budget cabanas south of Cancun. Any input, thoughts, experiences that you have had I would appreciate hearing about them.


I am planning on arriving in CUN Mar 2nd and leaving Mar 6th. I have a wedding that I have to be at in the afternoon on the 5th in Cancun. But other then that I will have plenty of free time and would be interested in getting / staying out of the Hotel Zone and making it to Tulum to see the ruins and/or get some SCUBA diving in.

I have first hand experience with cancunmx long befor finding Flyertalk. Even met up for a "do" and met mapchick.
