According to many measures Salvador is an even bigger Carnival than is Rio de Janeiro.

Maybe even most or all measures^

After multiple carnivals in both Salvador and Rio, its no doubt that Salvador is the best. Dance through some blocos, and head for the top camarotes on the beach circuit. If you really need the Rio (which by all other means and times is the best city) theathre at the Sambadrome, go the week after to view the Winners parade. Its much cheaper, and far better. No more competition, and the entrants give away parts of the costumes as well.

I know that, I suppose, but after all I live in Rio de Janeiro. ;)

The blocos are active today in Rio with ones in Leblon, Ipanema, and lost of others. I am not a carnival fan myself, but i like the excitement for everyone else. Today in Rio is even more exciting because The new Nossa Senhora da Copacabana bus lanes started this morning, so it will be even more confusing

Salvador's Carnival was bigger for some years, but that's no longer true since 2009. Rio is back on top since then.

By what measures?
Participants? Spectators? Tourists?

Any Camarotes in Rio close to Camarote Salvador?
Any bloco close to lets say any of the Ivete blocos?

Number of participants in every event in the city, just like they measured it in Salvador, but if you want participants in individual blocos or parades, Recife and Rio are ahead of Salvador.

Camarotes? Blocos don't have Camarotes. Blocos are free, blocos are spontaneous.

Ivete has a Trio, not a Bloco. Every city has a different kind of Carnival, you can't ask for things you see in Salvador in Rio or Recife.

On the beach circuit in Salvador the Blocos definately have camarotes. There are 5-10 really good ones with amazing parties. Full security etc.

And Ivete definitely has blocos, blocos around her trio. Great blocos, with great security.

I would say in Salvador the carnival finds you, while in Rio you have to find the carnival. You wont see any of those huge masses of people in Rio like you do in Salvador. Just my 5 Rials after 3 carnivals in Rio and 3 in Salvador.

The theatre at Sambadrome however is unrivalled, but it is hardly for the masses.
