Caribbean - St. Maarten security?

Does anyone have experience regarding theft on St. Maarten? I've read several reviews that say never leave valuables in your rental car. That's easy enough to arrange. But what about in the hotel rooms? Do I need to leave the laptop at home?

And ... is this different than any other Caribbean island?

I've been to SXM nearly a dozen times over the past 5 years, with hotel nights on both the French and Dutch sides. Most stays are two nights. Never had a problem myself, but SXM has a highly transient population compared to other islands. Something like 60 different nationalities live there. Use common sense and normal precautions that you would take when travelling in Florida or any tourist destination.

The crime rate on SXM has certainly increased over the past few years, and probably is higher than most other Caribbean islands.
