Just curious, but does anyone have a name and number for someone in catering at US? I want to give a call to get some kind of a clue as to what my wife's Envoy vegetarian meal is going to be this week.
Last envoy flight in December it was garbage. But on our return, there was a vegetarian (mushroom) entree selection for the rest of us (i.e., "people without food issues" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif) The problem with that was that she was not permitted to switch from her garbage meal to the mushroom until everyone else in the cabin had first refusal on the mushrooms.
Anyway, thought I'd try to see if she's bringing a picnic basket on board or not.
Thanks!

I wouldn't waste your time calling...
They'll tell you what you want to hear, but there are no guarantees. Pack a lunch to be safe.
I can't believe they wouldn't give her preference over the vegetarian meal if she asked for it in-advance and politely. I would have had drafted formal complaint before I landed.

After the menus were passed out and she saw the mushroom dish, she went to the galley to explain she had ordered the vegetarian meal, but saw the veggie option on the regular menu. First she asked what her special meal was. It was garbage. Then she nicely asked if they would be able to reserve one of the mushroom dishes for her. That's when they said no.
Creeps.

From my 8 years working at BWI catering I can tell you that to deny her the vegetarian she ordered was correct....policy wise. When a "special meal" is ordered...US pays the flight kitchen a premium for it. I understand that you were in envoy, but look at it from the other point of view. The flight attendant lets her have a mushroom meal, then some other passenger winds up with either nothing or an unwanted vegetarian plate. This is one of the reasons why I think menu's should be posted on the website just like movies. Menu's used to rotate monthly back when I was in catering...not sure about now.

As with the regular entree's, when you order a vegetarian entree, you are taking a chance that it will be something that you like. There's no guarantee that every customer is even going to like what is served to the rest of the passengers. That being said, when you order a vegetarian meal it is assumed that you will eat that meal, therefore a regular meal is not boarded for you. They don't board a vegetarian meal in addition to the regular compliment of meals just so you can change your mind if you like it. I'm on the F/A's side here - if you ordered it then you should be made to wait until the others have ordered before you are allowed to change your mind to the regular entree.

I do understand the point and can see it from both sides. But perhaps the biggest thing I'm trying to note here is that it wouldn't be an issue if the "special" meals in Envoy were of Envoy quality and not garbage quality.
For instance, when you consider the mushroom entree, it's obvious that catering IS CAPABLE of making a quality vegetarian dish. Why can't that dish be used for people who request vegetarian meals? They know its vegetarian and they know that there are passengers in Envoy who make special request for it. So make it available as the vegetarian selection! Not a couple pieces of plain tofu on a piece of lettuce which is what she got on the outbound.

Give it up syzygy8. I flew first to the west and back and yeah i lucked out with my special seafood meals which were excellent. But I order them in advance knowing full well that they might not be all that great. That's why airports have restaurants. We all know what you're after and so will US Airways. Quit trying to get something for nothing. They're in Chapter 11 and have bigger fish to fry. Bet your wife won't be getting any of that fish on her next special meal. K, that was really lame but drop it already.

You know, I sat here for a moment actually writing something to answer you. But then I realized there are too many people in the US forum who I respect and for whom I am happy to offer my advice and opinion to. It would be a dis-service to those here who I respect to even spend another moment thinking about you and your comments.
