If your health insurance doesn't pay anything for medical care outside your home country, what options do you have? Can you recommend any insurance companies?

If you qualify, a good source of cheap insurance is by obtaining the ISIC (http://www.isic.org). You have to be a full-time student or under age 26. There may also be a similar card for teachers, IIRC.

I've used International SOS in the past, though (fortunately) have never needed to avail myself of their services. But they seem well-respected and have an extensive clinic network.

I use BUPA, and am happy with them. They're a little more expensive than some, but the coverage and customer service are both good:

I'm using BUPA now also, as they have acquired IHI, the Denmark Company, my original insurer. IHI had very good coverage and BUPA has not, to my knowledge, changed it. I do, however, access it through a different website than acunningham:

I have also used International SOS. I highly recommend them. There is a long thread from a year or so ago on the subject. International SOS found me a US trained doc in Zambia a few years back.
