SkyTeam - Elite baggage allowance for connecting flight too?

Hi,

I'm a newbie here so forgive me if this question seems basic.

I am a Delta Skymiles silver medallion member and am allowed 2 x 70lb checked bags. I booked a through ticket from Atlanta (US) to Alicante (Spain) via Madrid.

The Atlanta-Madrid leg is on Air France but is marked as being operated by Delta. The Madrid to Alicante leg is on SpanAir.

My question is this: If my Air France flight is operated by Delta, does this mean they will give me the Delta allowance of 2 x 70lb bags? And what about my connecting flight on SpanAir? Or would I have pay extra for the baggage on that leg?

Thanks!

You will have your allowance so long as the other carriers are within ST. IME, you can connect with the total allowance as long as your bag check takes place with a ST carrier.

As for Spanair, they are a *A carrier so they probably will not honor your DL benefits. I only say 'probably' because anything is possible.

I do not believe this is accurate as many ST carriers (i.e. AF and KLM) do not offer extra baggage allowance to Delta elite members.

However, in the OP's case, the flight is operated by Delta, so 2 bags @ 70 lbs each will not be a problem to Madrid.

If the flight is originated by Delta and the first leg is on Delta the remainder of ST carriers on the same itinerary will honor the luggage allowance IME. I usually carry the eligibility rule in a paper copy in case of misunderstanding, but that has never failed me.

It's got little to do with the connecting carrier being a SkyTeam partner.

From the international contract of carriage:

I. Governing Rules for Codeshare Flights
For codeshare services, each customer will be entitled to the free baggage allowance and charged the excess baggage charges (when applicable) of the Marketing Carrier, regardless of who the Operating Carrier is. If the need arises for operational or safety related reasons, the Operating Carrier may require that carry-on baggage be checked at the gate, but no additional excess baggage charges will apply.

If Delta has an interline baggage agreement with Spanair (Delta Res can tell you) just check your bags through to avoid Spanair's fees.

Yes indeed. What if the carrier is not an IATA member of has not the rules in hand. That is why I carry the rules with me whenever i face a questionable situation.

Is the Spanair flight a UX (air europa ) code share? or is it JK ticket stock?

@Psollitt
Sorry, but like I said I'm a newbie. What is "JK" and how would I find out?
As best I can tell from looking at the email confirmation it's simply a SpanAir flight. No mention of Air Europa anywhere. Does that help?

@3Cforme
If I understand correctly (baggage allowance goes by "the Marketing Carrier, regardless of who the Operating Carrier is") I will only be allowed Air France's standard baggage, and not the Delta Elite 2x 70lb bags :-( Darn. Was hoping to head over the States and fill my two big bags up with lots of cheap baby stuff (baby on the way and everything is so expensive where I live in Spain).

Thanks anyway your advice everyone.

I'd call (or email if the flight is 10+ days away) DL to ask what they'll give you. If the flight is AF-coded but DL-operated, you're going to be checking in with DL. I would be astounded if their crippled IT were smart enough to tell them that one of their own elites should have a lesser baggage allowance simply because the flight is AF-coded.

The benefit to emailing is that you can get a response in writing, which you can use for leverage at check-in if there are issues. Also, I'd approach the question to them along the lines of "I just wanted to confirm that my baggage allowance on this flight will be 2x70 lb as a Silver Medallion flying on a DL-operated flight, even though I'm booked on the AF flight number." If you come at it sounding like you think it's 2x50lb because of the AF aspect, you might get an agent who quickly tells you that's right without checking anything.

I have flown from HAN to WAW via FRA, Flight from HAN to FRA was operated by VN and from FRA to WAW by LO, I used VN Gold Card and there were no problems with additional checked bags on LO, all bags arrived.

gruszkatt, who was the marketing carrier on the HAN-FRA flight? If it was VN-coded and VN-operated, that's different than OP's situation. OP's flight is AF-coded, DL-operated, and OP is a DL elite.

Ah... it was operated by VN and didn't have a code-share on that route... was not a Skyteam member yet (in December 09). Now it is code-shared with AZ and OK.
