Here's a stay report for the City View Inn Long Island City (New York) from 2/4-2/5
Location: The hotel is located in Long Island City just off Exit 15 of I-495 (The Long Island Expressway) on Greenpoint Avenue. It's about a half mile from the 7 Line's 40th Street Subway stop and has a bus stop for the weekday only B24 bus out front of it. It's next to a restaurant called the Bantry Bay Publick House (didn't look appealing) and one block from a new Fairfield Inn by Marriott.
Hotel: The hotel is an older brick building that really feels its age. The lobby is small and cramped at the desk is actually behind glass that may be bullet proof. There are a couple of couches in a cramped common area and a tiny "business center" with two computers behind it. The breakfast room is down the hall in what used to be a guest room I'd imagine. There's only one elevator and fitting with the rest of the hotel, it's small and old and very slow.
Check-In: I had to wait for a couple of colorful local types to check in and pay with cash (haven't seen that in a while). No recognition of my Diamond status (shocker) and the attitude of the staff was generally rude. I was told about breakfast in a mumbled voice and then pointed on my way.
Room: Surprisingly, the room was decent enough. I had a lovely view of the hotel's tiny parking lot but the King bed was large and comfortable enough, the heat worked, there was a decent sized desk (larger than I've seen at some Hampton Inns) and my room came with a whirlpool. I tried out said whirlpool and it actually worked well. That was the highlight of my room but I'm not sure why there was a sliding compartment you could open up so you could see into the bedroom.
Check-Out/Other: Breakfast only ran from 6-9 and it was crowded into the aforementioned small room. There was a large dish of scrambled eggs (I didn't sample them), pastries (awful), bagels (actually halfway decent), a waffle maker and the rest of the standard 2 star hotel breakfast stuff. Check out was fast and I was given a voucher for a shuttle ride to the subway. The ride was in a seedy livery car that negotiated to take a fare as I was getting out of the subway stop with some girl on the street. I think that's illegal but who am I to judge?
I only stayed here because I found a $54 rate (AAA) and I wanted a bed near mass transit. I don't think I'll be back, the Ramada in Jamaica is usually $69 and it's far better.
