My wife is running a conference next month in DC & one night set up a bus tour of the monuments. Is there a bakery near the Willard hotel where we could pick up cookies, etc. during the day for the participants on the bus? Thanks

IIRC, there is/was one on the corner behind the JW Marriott, across the street from the Willard. I can't recall the name, but it was one of the sandwich/soup/bakery chains.

Will you have a car/a free half hour to hop in a cab? You'll find the best options out of that general area.

I'd recommend Leopold's cafe in Georgetown, in an alley just off M street, as well as Patisserie Poupon up Wisconsin Ave.

You can take about a 10-15 minute cab ride or drive to either of these places. Great croissants, macarons, and so on.

I recommend Firehook Bakery - 555 13th Street, NW

In the old days, I would have recommended Reeves Bakery. But Reeves has been gone for probably 4 years now... Sad.

Corner bakery is a popular chain in DC -- there are several of them within walking distance of the Willard.

Firehook is good, a little longer walk, but walkable. Firehook is a cut above Corner Bakery in terms of quality.

The place mentioned above in Georgetown (PP) is yet a cut above Firehook (also in price). They also tend to have more fragile items.

There is a Whole Foods market on P Street, near 15th, walkable or a short taxi ride. For cheaper, there are Safeways in the area, though none walkable--need to take a taxi or subway. There are CVS pharmacies in the area, which have low-end packaged cookies.

If cupcakes are substitutable for cookies, Red Velvet Cupcakery at 7th and E should be a less than ten minute walk.

Thanks everyone for your help, your suggestions were great! My real preference would be to get the cookies from the kitchen at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., but I don't think that's possible.

I concur with the recommendations for Firehook: It's good, it's local, it's been around for a while (since 1992). I've also heard good things about the bakery attached to Potenza, a nice Italian place at 1430 H St.

Mmmmm...strawberry pie...banana cream pie...A Friday afternoon tradition in my nearby office in the late 70's early 80's...:)

I'll second Firehook, but in terms of ease, there's a few other chain bakeries in the area - Au Bon Pain and Corner Bakery are right around the corner.

Also gone from that neighborhood - Clement's Pastry Shop on G Street, which relocated to Hyattsville a few years ago.

Yup... Go with Firehook. Can't go wrong.
