Brazil - New more luxurious Hotel das Cataratas

On another site I noticed a handful of comments about the tired old Hotel das Cataratas on the Brazil side of Foz de Iguaçu. The hotel was completely renovated about two years ago and is now part of the Orient Express group. It is delightful and luxurious.

Surely the Sheraton on the Argentina side is also having renovations, but that hotel is no match for the luxury and views of this hotel. I stayed there just after the renovations were completed and was surprised at how good it was.

Fully agree with your comment. The new Orient Express property is now open and by far the best hotel choice in Cataratas! ^

I stayed there last July and was blown away. The walk to the falls at sunrise and having the falls to yourself was the icing on the cake.

Yes, that's really amazing. I did the same in January 2010. You can just walk alone and freely in the middle of the mighty falls. Next time, I will take a flash light and go there in the middle of the night.

That would be really neat! Great pictures. :)

One of the best advantages of Hotel das Cataratas is that as a resident you have access to the Falls viewing areas without restriction. Because you are already inside the park you can wander around at any hour.

In another thread I was reminded that this information should be posted here.

Great photos and great to hear the enthusiastic reviews! I am planning to go to IGU and the Hotel das Cataratas in early July.

However, I am a bit worried about the weather and the water in the waterfalls. I heard that there is less water in the falls in June/July, is this true? Is it still worth it? And on the weather...is it too cold to enjoy the pool?

Thanks a lot!

The weather in July there can be quite cold, and so far this fall is colder than normal. It is 10C as I write this (09:25 local time). July temperature averages are 12C low and 23C high, so swimming will be for the intrepid only.

July is also the low rainfall month so that falls will be their lowest and that flow is often reduced then to provide for enough flow on upstream dams.

Thus, July would be my least preferred month to go there. It could end out being wonderful but your odds are worst then.

I was there last year in late July. (Had to go when things worked out for the trip, yanno?) The weather was cold and rainy - I was in long pants and a sweatshirt the whole time. The airport was also having serious fog issues. In fact, we couldn't land because of fog, were diverted (to Curitiba maybe?), and ended up being bused in 8 hours overnight. It did cut into my time and killed one of my nights at the Hotel, but I chalked it all up to one of those adventures that make travel great. :D And on the other hand, I arrived at the hotel about 6:00 am -- perfect time to walk to the falls all alone at sunrise! ^

Anyway, I have no other season to compare it to, but I found the waterfalls very impressive. If the water levels were low, I didn't know it. The water was pounding and powerful and amazing. The overcast days and rain made the falls more mysterious and interesting, I thought. I've got some pictures and some video of the falls at that time if you're interested --

Oh, and between the rain and cold, I didn't go anywhere near the pool other than to take pictures!
