TalkBoard Topics - Please welcome Spiff as our new Talkboard president

I am pleased to announce that Spiff will assume the position as Talkboard president. While it is with deep regret that we see gleff go, Spiff has been an active contributor on Talkboard for some time and will do an excellent job at filling the newly vacated position.

The Talkboard guidelines say:

b. Vice President/Secretary: Shall in the event of the absence or inability of the President to exercise his office become acting President of the TalkBoard with all the rights, privileges and powers as if he had been the duly elected President.

Thus Spiff, as the board Vice President, steps into the President's spot.

All the best to Spiff as he assumes these responsibilties.

Ya know, we kinda forgot to make a provision for replacing the VP/Secretary in the event the VP/Secretary is elevated to President.

Is the TB going to have an election or is Spiffy going to fill both roles 'til December or whatever?

How does this work - does the VP become president, or does the runner-up in the presidential election win? All seems to be moving rather fast :D

Might I extend my personal congratulations to Spiff. I've long been a fan of his work helping members and his work and diligence in other areas has just been outstanding. FlyerTalk has this kind of quality members. Go hockey guy!

Now that we once again have 9 TalkBoard members thanks to UA_Flyer joining us, we will have an election for TalkBoard VP/Secretary.

How does this work - does the VP become president, or does the runner-up in the presidential election win?

That is a very good question. IMHO, there is a clear provision for the Vice-President to assume the role of ACTING President in case of temporary absence, but no provision whatsoever for the Vice-President to assume the role of substantive President.

The two are very different roles requiring different skill sets and this is why there are entirely separate elections for each. The runner-up in the President elections does NOT automatically become Vice President.

There should be a new election for President and if Spiff were to prevail in that election, then a new election for Vice President to succeed him. In the interim however, Spiff should remain ACTING President.

This appears to be yet another attempt to ensure that the power at the top of the TalkBoard remains within the family of Moderators who dominate the TalkBoard.

Did the moderators write the TOS? If not, I do not see how this is their fault. I hardly see the need for another pot-shot at the mods when you (one of the few non-mods) have decided not to fulfill your term:rolleyes:. Or is it their fault for that? I have not yet seen your resignation yet (although it is becoming hard to keep track of them all) to understand why you are leaving.

I respect your decision to leave, but not see how the mods are responsible for this. Either way, this VP/sec. decision is something that will need to be sorted out when the dust settles...regardless of who is still on talkboard.

And finally, congrats to Spiff on becoming the new President.

Still w/ the black helicopters - geesh.

Given that the TB guidelines were created, edited & approved by TB at the time & AFAIK they were not all mods, think you're offbase on this one.

Welcome Spiff to acting prez.

Congratulations, Spiff. He's served many times in the role of Vice President. He's studied. He's steady. He's ready! ^

Seriously, a really great guy and a geally great member of Flyertalk.

As former Talkboard President I will be staying out of politics here for awhile. Just as in one of the better (UMHO) traditions of American politics.

Serious question then - where in the TB guidelines does it say that the VP becomes president if the president leaves?

I'll stay clear from the moderator conspiracy, but it seems odd that the new president is not the runner up from the initial presidency vote.

Yes, I did read that. But it doesn't answer the question, does it?

In the section posted there, it says the VP becomes the ACTING president. It does not say he or she becomes the permanent president, does it?

Seems like one important word is being skipped or ignored here. I am of the opinion that an ACTING president is only a temporary situation until a permanent replacement can be selected. Since the rules do not mention how to find a permanent replacement, picking the second in the presidential vote, or holding a new vote seems like the only fair way to proceed.

No, that says he becomes the ACTING President of TalkBoard.

There is nothing that says he becomes the SUBSTANTIVE President of TalkBoard.

If the intention was that the VP take over as the SUBSTANTIVE President, there would not be the use of the word ACTING.

One can find the same ambiguity in the U.S. Constitution. It was pretty well settled, though, in 1841. :D

Now, of course, such is not nearly as weighty as the Presidency of The Talkboard.

Hail to the Spiff. :)

So what is it? President or Acting President? All signs (title thread, poster title) point to this being a permenant decision.

It is the former title (i.e. "President" rather than "Acting President").

Yes, which is why some of us are questioning what basis that permanent decision was taken on. If it was simply an executive decision taken by the Community Director in disregard of the prescribed processes (as is her right to do if she so chooses), then we should be informed as such.

Spiff should voluntarily call for a formal vote of TalkBoard members to endorse his presidency, or else risk being considered as an illegitimate pretender for the remainder of his term.

 Huh?? The OP shows that the Talkboard Guidelines clearly handles this. If anything the sucession for the VP/Secretrary is not considered...although Spiff clarified how it will be handled.

Maybe Spiff should abruptly resign and then complain about how things are being handled@:-).

As some actors have been better acting as a president than actor, may the act be a long one.
