There was earlier speculation, but I guess it's now official. From the US website....

Effective August 1, 2003, Northwest Airlines will no longer participate in the Dividend Miles program. The last day to earn miles for qualifying Northwest Airlines flights is July 31, 2003, and all award travel must be completed by July 31, 2003.

This has been on the US website for at least a few weeks.

When will Qantas leave. If so, other Star Alliance partners like SK,LH,SQ better join or US's Dividend Miles will really be gutted.

I hadn't noticed it. Then again, I'm not often looking at the NW awards chart either.

But you're right about Qantas. Without solid replacements options, that would be a terrible loss.

I really hope they don't think that UA will be sufficient as their only partner. That seems to be where they're headed. I know they said they plan to join Star, but I'll believe it when I see it. In the meantime, it would be nice if they'd keep other options around. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I wouldn't be so sure about Qantas leaving. With Qantas obtaining a significant stake in Air New Zealand, there has been speculation about the possibility of Qantas joining Air NZ in the Star Alliance according to AU/NZ newspapers.
