What's the general thought please - my flight arrives at midnight - do not
feel like public transport at 1am so take a taxi - probably $90 guess or book a car to meet us or a share of a shuttle van but then we might have to
wait a while - any comments please

I don't think there would be any public transit options at that hour (the 5A bus won't be running and Metro shuts down at midnight on weeknights). A cab would be a little cheaper than your estimate, but I wouldn't be 100% confident that there would be any cabs at IAD at that hour. It might be best to reserve a car service.

It's a wonderful flight schedule booked using cash & points with an arrival time of 23.55 but as it's a domestic flight I would hope we would be out of the airport before 1am - I'll take your advice and book a car on the supershuttle sight unless you know of an alternative....
Thanks

There'll be plenty of taxis at 2355!
You should be out - even with checked luggage - kerbside by 0015 or so.
A taxi downtown should run $60 or less with tip.

Forget 11:35 p.m.; I had no trouble and no wait getting a cab when I arrived a little before 2 a.m. last May. (The cabbie said he liked the absence of traffic on his overnight shift.)

Yes, you will save money with SuperShuttle, but at that time of night I'd rather spend a little extra to minimize my chances of getting an involuntary tour of Northern Virginia suburbs on my way home.

I live in the Adams Morgan area, so probably close to your destination. My fares from Dulles run in the high 50s to low 60s, so I end up paying $65 or $70 after tip. (note that it is cheaper to go to Dulles -- end up paying $55 or 60 at most)

I dislike SuperShuttle (or any shuttle) because of the "tour of the local area" feature. You won't even save much money, since an extra pax on a taxi is only $2 extra or so.

Thanks for the extra info - I would not mind the supershuttle so much during socialable hours but at 1am or so in the morning I think all my wife and I would like to do is find our hotel - it's the Madison ...

The Madison is lovely... you'll like it.

And just to second (or third) that you'll have no problem getting a cab. Washington Flyer has a monopoly on cabs at IAD, and I think part of the deal is that there always has to be someone there to pick people up.

Enjoy your trip!

Supershuttle is a crapshoot on the best days in this area, and not one I'd recommend to anyone. From drivers with poor driving skills and history, to trips where they've gotten very lost ... its not worth the hassle in an area with such horrid traffic to begin with.

Enjoy

Of course, taxis can be a bit of a crapshoot, too. I once had a Washington Flyer driver from IAD who drove right past the exit from the Dulles Access Road to the Beltway.
