Brazil - What is happening in Fortaleza 30 Jan-2 Feb

Even on ExpertFlyer there shows almost zero availability to depart Fortaleza between 30 Jan and 2 Feb. I have no idea why but it is unusual. I have never failed to get the exact flights I wanted.
Does anybody know what is happening there? Other than the 80th birthday of my mother-in-law's sister, that is.

If you are talking about domestic flights, it may be because it's the end of summer vacations/back to school time in Brasil.

That should not be quite enough, I thought, because there are no seats at all. Usually back to school leaves quite a few higher priced seats for domestic business people. I thought that might be the cause but most other domestic destinations are heavy, but not wiped out.
Your case is quite plausible and maybe that is it.

We're in Fortaleza. Pre-Carnaval "blocos" officially start today (they really started 3 weeks ago), but other than that, don't know of any activity attracting people. We're actually leaving town, driving to Cumbuco, to escape the noise (the center of activities is immedately next to the building we live in; the city has lots of large spaces, but likes this space and is oblivious to any problems it causes residents).
"Almost" no availability means what? You can't get from where to Fortaleza? TAM's Web site shows availble seats from GIG, SDU, GRU and BSB tomorrow and Monday. Several flights to choose from. Not necessarily the lowest fares for every flight, but that doesn't seem unusual at the last minute. Very, very few had the notation that only a certain number of seats were still available. I did not check Gol, Azul, Avianca (formerly Ocean Air), etc.

You didn't get the memo?? Everyone's fleeing town. Something about a tsunami. Or Godzilla. Or something like that.
We're in Fortaleza but aren't flying until 2/16. You say no flights to anywhere on any airline?? TAM's Web site shows availble seats to GIG, GRU, LIS and MIA tomorrow and Monday. I didn't check Gol, Azul, Webjet, Avianca (ex-Ocean Air), etc. Where did you check?
ExpertFlyer, TAM, GOL, Azul and Avianca. Both TAM and GOL showed availability but it was not bookable when I tried. As TAM Vermelho I could get one seat but not two.
It was strange that availability, not cheap, but availability showed but was not bookable. I wish I were in Fortaleza too.
Sorry, I see you're trying to leave Fortaleza. So you're asking what's going on to make Fortaleza's residents leave??
TAM's Web site also shows avaiable flights to GIG, SDU, GRU and BSB. I would assume Gol and others also have seats.
