Hi, govt employee looking for Govt rates:
Feb 13 - Feb 19
Feb 28 - Mar 5

Thusfar I can only get Hilton/Marriott/etc for $131 if I stay past Miramar, La Jolla, or in TJ. I've always stayed downtown (Hyatt, several hiltons, embassy suites, mariotts, humphreys, etc).

What gives? Does anyone have a rec for $131/night or so that may be closer to point loma?

My last trip (jan 18-22) the govt rate opened up at Embassy Suites on harbor dr 3 days before my trip but i remain skeptical for these trips... I typically can find SOME Hilton/Mariott/Hyatt/SPG/etc hotel to stay in thats less than 5 miles from city center, yet this time I cant.

Any advice appreciated....

Your first pair of dates is bumping up against the convention of the American Orthopaedic Suergons (32,000 delegates).

The convention calendar doesn't show any big meetings for the second period, so I'm not sure about that one.

Your rate sounds good to me, conference or not. Last June, while my wife attended a large conference in SD, we paid over $300 a night at the Manchester Grand Hyatt (and that was the convention rate). Once the conference attendees started flooding out, we got a room, through Priceline, at the Omni, down the street, for $80 plus taxes and fees. What's your perdiem rate for SD?

You're lucky to get anything in the county at that rate.

I also think you may want to give Priceline a try. I booked the Manchester Grand Hyatt for $98, including taxes and fees, a few weeks ago when rates were outrageous due to conventions. It saved me at least $100 - 150 a night based on what i was finding on other sites.

Make sure you choose your neighborhood and star rating carefully. And only do it if you know your trip won't be canceled as there's no backing out.

Per diem is $131 for hotel. As another pointed out, that orthopedic conference is the reason for the issues.

Is $131 a good rate? of course it is, but most hotels have agreements with the fed. government to set aside a small amount of rooms at the govt rate. Unfortunately I ended up in Del Mar at the Hilton Garden Inn. Quite a drive but nice property regardless.
