TalkBoard Topics - Why is there no Men's travel forum?

Men have special travel needs every bit as much as women do. Or GLBT do. Or pet owners do. Or parents do. Or the disabled do.

Why does FT discriminate against men by not giving us a specific forum in which to discuss uniquely male issues in a safe and welcoming environment?

I'd like to hear where each TB member comes down on the creation of a mens travel forum to give men equal accommodation in the FT world under Special Interest Travel.

Why is there no Men's travel forum?

1. Because when you were on TB you didn't make a motion to establish one.

2. Because all but one of the forums on FT have mostly posts from men.

3. Because posts might be accompanied by pictures of the men and that, frankly, would bore the heck out of me.

Well I'll do a search & read all the past stuff later this week or next when I'm back in town, but I vaguely remember the topic being brought up before & it didn't get approved. What has changed since then for it to be considered again, & can you clarify your reasons for it according to forum creation criteria?

"If you want to suggest a new forum or have other suggestions for TalkBoard consideration, it would be very helpful if you can demonstrate - with some supporting evidence - why you think there is a need for that new forum or other change to FlyerTalk.

This can be shown by, among other things, any or all of the following:

- existing threads which would be best suited in your proposed forum.

- describing a need which is not being met for a group of Flyertalk members by the existing forums.

- other relevant arguments showing why Flyertalk would be improved by the addition of this forum or change.

Although individual TalkBoard members each have their own ideas regarding what will or will not constitute a successful new forum or change, presenting evidence of the nature above will almost certainly increase your chances of getting support and possible agreement.

The TalkBoard generally votes on suggestions that have proven support among posters, and a 2/3 majority vote of TalkBoard members is needed for any motion to succeed."

Cheers.

Interesting....

I am usually the one who objects to "allowed discrimination"..

You know.. women only gyms being legal, men only gyms not allowed.. that sort of thing...

In this case however I can't see the point...

Perhaps some examples of "men only" travel issues would be helpful... because to be honest none actually occur to me....

I'd be happy to consider it if you compare the proposal to the published criteria for new forums. As you have seen with the Brazil vote, this process works.

Getting this back on topic:

Why does FT discriminate against men by not giving us a specific forum in which to discuss uniquely male issues in a safe and welcoming environment?

Can you give us some examples of these issues? I was thinking along the lines of:
Can I buy a diamond ring with miles?
Can I pay for the wedding reception with miles?
Can invitees give us miles as wedding gifts?
What can I get my wife for our anniversary using miles?
How can I use miles to get out of the doghouse for forgetting our anniversary?
Are there any marriage counselors who accept miles as payment?
Should I use miles to send my wife on a holiday trip alone?
and finally:
I'm out of miles. Are there any divorce lawyers that give out miles?

Oh, and "do a search".

None of these are specific to men.

What ScottC said.

And, we've been down this road before and it often ends in the claimed "need" for a forum where misogynistic "humor" [sic] and smutty innuendo can find a home.

Plenty of places for that elsewhere.

Until the OP says otherwise, we'll consider this a reasonable topic request. Consequently I have removed a bunch of off-topic posts.

"Do a search" is not an appropriate response, BTW. The OP is quite aware this is not the first time the subject has been introduced.

I recognize that some of the redacted posts were attempts at humor, but they were creating a chain reaction.

Maybe thinking has changed?

If I understood your message correctly, it's a good thing the Supreme Court doesn't follow this procedure, otherwise, we would never have seen numerous cases overruled and this country would still have, among other things:

Segregated schools;
No right to counsel if you cannot afford one; and
Wiretapping without a warrant,

to name only three things which were upheld by High Court decisions and later overruled by other decisions.

Please clarify: are you suggesting that each new Talk Board does not have the right to re-consider the decisions of previous Boards without a demonstrated change in FT?

1. Because when you were on TB you didn't make a motion to establish one.How do you know what took place in the private TB forum?

2. Because all but one of the forums on FT have mostly posts from men.All but one of the forums on FT have mostly posts from frequent flyers. That's precisely why we have specialized forums. And in the case of the special interest forums, we create niches where specific groups of people can discuss their unique issues in a safe and welcoming environment.

3. Because posts might be accompanied by pictures of the men and that, frankly, would bore the heck out of me.
Why would that be the case? That's not the case in any of the existing special interest travel forums.

You didn't understand my message correctly.

The topic had been raised previously, but had not been approved at the time of request (or requests). I said that I would do a search & research the pros/cons raised previously, after my latest trip (which I'm still on) to become familiar with the subject.

I legitimately asked the OP what had changed since the last time he proposed the topic for it to be considered again, to which there hasn't been a response yet other than the gals have one.

I also listed the criteria established for creation of forums so that the OP & others would be familiar with them & could do their homework in presenting their proposal & the back-up for why they thought it should be created, and which would assist TB members in making a decision.

Cheers.

Well, I had thought or maybe naively hoped that minds had opened and prejudices had faded. But I can see from many of the responses that that may not be the case.

I'm open minded on this subject. If there are engaging topics that belong in the new forum and don't have a clear home elsewhere, that's a solid argument in favor of a new forum. Koko's list is a good start to that conversation.

The counter-argument seems to be that most travelers are male, and therefore a man's point of view is the default for most of the forums here on FT, at least on any subjects where sex makes any difference. It's typically only groups who are in a minority who feel the need to have a place to share their group-specific perspectives. The majority has plenty of company to share its perspective in the mainstream discussion.

Are there men's travel issues that are not mainstream? Maybe. But I expect that the best organization would be along lines other than male vs. female. For example, a Couples Travel forum might have an audience. A forum on How to Impress Your Stay At Home Partner might be fun. I could even, just barely, imagine a forum on Pick-Up Techniques On the Road. All of these would be of interest to men and women, gay or straight.

But Men's Travel? To me, given today's demographic reality, that's just travel. If society changes to the point where all my flights are packed with women, then I will very happily sign up to support a Men's Travel forum. We will then have a lot to talk about. :D

Let's continue the discussion. I think we can all learn something.

This, Sir, is why we don't have a mens only section. We don't need to make it easier for women to see why men should have never been created.

Well you can't be referring to me because I said I'd do a search & read all the background when I got back from current trip.

However, you know that in order to have a forum created, there are some criteria to be met for creation of new forums. So presumably to help your case you & others who might also be for it, you'll do your homework & post according to criteria vs saying well the gals have one, and everyone is cast in stone, etc.

If you're not willing to do that, then I've got to wonder how much you're really behind it.

What an incredibly sexist point of view. Why do you hate/mistrust men so?

Maybe not you, but many of us men have the ability to converse in a safe, welcoming environment about the things that matter to us. You seem to have quite a low opinion of men. Misandry is an ugly thing.

SkiAdcock, I'm willing to invest the time to meet the established 'soft' criteria. But first I want to bet you a Guinness that even if I meet every one of those criteria the closed minded and the haters will make sure this forum never happens. Deal?

We need a forum for frequent travelers, as those of us who fly a lot have different needs than many of the lowly Base, Blue, and Silver members that are free to post in most of the forums here.

Why is FT discriminating against frequent travelers?
