There are not many details but CNN has picked up coverage Report: Dozens killed in blast at Moscow airport (http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/01/24/explosion-rocks-moscow-airport/?hpt=T1&iref=BN1)

Various Russian agencies also report about this.

Edit: The government is confirming at least 31 have died in the bombing with many more injured. It looks like flights are now being diverted to VKO and SVO.

How sad ... :td::(

Some weeks ago me and Ms. ParisMoskau just talked about how in OVB they still have the security checks at the airport entrance, while in DME they didn't have them any longer ....

Unfortunately, doing a check at the door (as some airports do/did) just means the crowd at curbside becomes the target.

There are reports that flights are being diverted to SVO and VKO. LH has canceled flights for the moment.

Very sad indeed - I was just two weeks ago at that airport and a month ago in SVO during the "collapse". It was striking to no longer see security checks at either airport when the smallish PEE airport still had it.

But to think of it, all transit systems (airports, train stations, etc.) are very vunerable in general to horrible acts like this. My heart is aching for the victims and their families.

And they ALWAYS check you when you come into the terminal at OVB. No exceptions. When I'm in a hurry running through SVO and the guard is asleep I am generally glad. On days like yesterday though I pray to God he'll be awake. I head back again in a few weeks. Though I'll transit SVO from MAD on my way to OVB, my heart will think about DME and the senseless tragedy there yesterday.

I'm curious about this quote from this cnn article (http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/01/24/airport.security/index.html):

"I've heard lots of things to suggest that the facilities, the standard of comfort, the way people are treated [at Domodedevo] is not up to international standards.

I flew into DME three months ago from LHR and it was fine - the facilities seemed comfortable, we weren't mistreated on any level... is this guy's comment just out of nowhere, or do you Moscow regulars agree with him?

Curiously yours,
Shannon

The airport overall is fine. The arrivals area is a mess but not any worse than those of for example LAX.

I would say that DME is mostly fine except for the infuriating chaos at immigration. One would have thought that in the complete overhaul of the airport several years ago, they might have changed the part where hundreds of people are simply stuffed into a tiny area with no facilities for orderly queueing, but no. :mad: This is the one thing that is just like the bad old days (and the current days at SVO).

Oh yeah, totally forgot about that part! It was a bit of a zoo, and of course we had no clue what the heck we were supposed to do. They sure could use some organization in that process - but we learned that in general there wasn't much orderly queueing in Moscow (at every Metro escalator we saw a similar mob...)
