US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Question on the upgrade coupon mileage counter

There seems to be a Catch 22 in how US has been counting miles toward upgrade coupons that stems from of all of the preferred mileage bonuses we've been getting this year. As I understand it, the rule is that you get a set of coupons for each 10,000 miles flown after achieving status. But with all of the Get Out More, 12 segments, etc. promotions, I just about went directly from Silver to Gold, without ever passing 10,000. A US CSR told me that I flew 4,739 miles after I got to Silver, but then the clock reset to zero when I hit Gold and I've flown 4,239 miles since. The mileage numbers are right, but I was expecting to hear that my upgrade mileage counter was at 8,978 (i.e., all of my post-achieving-status miles). Do I have this right, that I'm 5,761 miles away from 10,000? Also, is the end the year important in this counter? Thanks.

P.S. I'm not actually complaining. Without the promotions, I'd barely be Silver, much less Gold.

You are right. Every time you reach a new status, the upgrade counter resets. But you alos receive 2 NAU's and 2 DMUPSYS2's so it is not a total loss.

I went from 50K tier miles to CP with only one set of NAU's. So I know what you are talking about.

yeah thats the way it works, you can also get caught like this if you BofA Visa 10K preferred kicks in at the wrong time. Since the only time you can suffer this fate is when you are reaching GP or CP its hard to really complain much about it.

Thanks. It's been a pretty unique situation this year, when using your Silver SWs to Europe just about earns you your Gold SWs.

If you're asking when the counter for earning NAUs resets, it's the end of February, not the end of the calendar year in December. You'll want to take this fact into account when planning travel for the first two months of the year. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Hmm...and having this conversation with the US CSR didn't trigger an audit on your account (removing miles, status, etc.)? If not, then it's good to hear that US isn't treating folks as badly as they had threatened to. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I did my own audit and I'm pretty sure that I've been qualified for all of the promotions I've received. In one case they gave me miles before I was qualified (the 10,000 AMEX segments bonus), but I qualified shortly thereafter. So I was pretty confident that I wasn't ratting myself out by making the call.

And, davohuang, thanks for the tip about the yearend matter. It will certainly affect me.
