I've searched all over this site and can't seem to find any info on Air Berlin. I'll be flying from JFK to Munich via Dusseldorf.

Are they a no-frills airline where you have to purchase your food & adult beverages during a transatlantic flight?

Air Berlin Food Service (http://www.airberlin.com/site/flug_service_an_bord.php?LANG=eng)

This should answer your question. Air Berlin is not a LCC. They have drinks and food for free.

My experiences of Air Berlin were all excellent and you should find it comfortable and efficient. Have a good flight.

Air Berlin offers a decent service, so free food, drinks and magazines will be available.
So you won´t need dollar-notes in your pocket :)
Enjoy your flight.

Thanks for this info too!! Parents are doing short haul inter-Europe and wondering about service so this helps greatly!

A quick check of the fares on Air Berlin's website should dispel any notion that they are a low cost carrier.

hey all .. despite my search I haven't found an answer to an inquiry

75 yo parents arriving alone in Berlin (first time too) in late July going to Hilton Berlin.. what is best safest way to get them to the hotel... they are very old school/ conservative type that mass transit would be basically out of question as I am not with them (38 yo here)

any taxi/private car recommendations?

Thanks in advance!:)

We fly AB regularly between Germany and Tenerife (hence, my web-name) and quite often between US and Germany.

A couple of comments:
Food for short haul inter-Europe is very limited, a small sandwich or snack bar may be all that is offered. Only on longer flights have we ever been offered a free glass of wine with the meal (the usual pasta or chicken).

Magazines -- only in German, in case you want to "brush up" on your language skills!

Generally, there isn't much to complain about other than the very tight seating in Y. On our last flight from MIA to CGN (via Berlin) on a 2for1 special that they ran, we received our luggage 6 (!!) days later. Guess they make a lot more profit on freight than on luggage -- we saw ENORMOUS amounts of it being offloaded in Berlin. Probably not enough room for passengers' luggage. And the compensation offer for the 6 days wait -- €25!! (Should have gotten my AMEX platinum a couple of weeks earlier.)

Another note about luggage -- watch out for overweight charges. It's very expensive by the kilo -- IIRC €8 per kilo for short haul (i.e. the one-hour flight between London and Germany). The only "bargain" is for a second suitcase for long-haul. To or from Germany from US the second piece is $40/€40.

Airberlin website insinuates that you will have to pay for alcoholic drinks unless you are traveling in business class.

On board we offer coffee, tea, soft drinks or fruit juices free of charge. There is also a selection of alcoholic drinks. For current prices please refer to the list of beverages on board.

The luggage is a concern. We're traveling JFK-DUS-MUC with a 2-hour layover. Not concerned with the return flight. Maybe I'll purchase trip insurance to be on the safe side. Anyone else have luggage problems with Airberlin?

Just take the first taxi you see. Getting a Taxi in Tegel is quite easy, just follow the signs. In Berlin all Taxis have the same color (http://www.morgenpost.de/multimedia/archive/00391/caro_14_taxi_BM_Ber_391264b.jpg). The taxi driver should know the hilton and most speak at least some basic English. This should not lead to any problems.

sberk

PS: You should really consider using public transport in Berlin. It's mostly much faster.

Just out of curiosity. What has this to do with Air Berlin?? You might get more answers on your question if you had started your own thread and not under a thread which is about Air Berlin and not the city of Berlin.

To the Hilton? About 20 Euro plus/minus 2 Euro

Better to give him a quick answer than to start the 22th thread on taxi costs in Berlin

True. Wine and beer is free on domestic flights and not free on intra Europe flights probably with the exception of typical charter destinations. I do not know about the intercon flights

You should be on the safe side. Two hours in DUS is plenty of time.

Agreed. You should be fine.
Our luggage problem had nothing to do with the transfer time, but with the fact that they left our luggage in MIA. (And I hate to say it -- but I think it was intentional so that they could load more freight $$$$ Haven't found any other reason possible, since we checked in over 3 hours before departure.)

Getting a taxi at Tegel in late July will be nearly impossible however since the airport will be closed. But I doubt getting a taxi from BER will be difficult. Fare to the Hilton will be higher unfortunately, probably near €40.

Why are we discussing transportation from Tegel to a hotel in Berlin in a thread about service on board of Air Berlin?
