Am I reading ClearTrip correctly when I see only early morning and late afternoon trains from Agra to Delhi Nez or Central? Nothing between about 9:00 and 15:00? Seems strange that you can't get back to Delhi before 18:30 or so unless you leave Agra by early morning. We'll arrive in Agra from Delhi early morning on one day, see Agra area sites that day, the Taj at evening and then again at daybreak the next day. Ready to come back to Delhi by late morning but there do not appear to be trains to get us back to Delhi then. Will we have to rent a car/driver to get back to Delhi by mid-afternoon?

Suggest you do a one way car rental. There are a few "long distance" trains. However they are typically more than a few hrs late. Ck http://www.trainenquiry.com/TrainsBetwImpStation.aspx

All these are coming from halfway across the country - south and south-east india. Not recommended as they're very likely to be late.

Thanks very much for the responses. The additional sites did show other mid-day trains but, as pointed out, when you check the details each of these seems to be regularly late by anywhere from one to three hours. I guess I could plan on not showing up at the regular time and assuming a delay but no doubt I would do so on the one day when the train runs on time. Otherwise it's probably a long wait in the station no matter what mid-day train I choose. I think I will take the advice of getting a car and driver for the one way trip back from Agra to my hotel in Delhi. That way I can set the time and avoid a lot of the hassle.
