Air Canada has been a surprising star on the stock market over the past 21 months, but the momentum is starting to shift in WestJet Airlines Ltd. (WJA-T14.10-0.04-0.28%)’s favour.

WestJet shares climbed a mere 14 per cent last year while Air Canada (AC.A-T3.12-0.16-4.88%) stock soared 161 per cent. Now, several analysts are examining whether it’s time to switch investing strategies and back WestJet.

There is a major difference between trading and investing.

IMHO, airline stocks are for trading only.

Given that about every significant North American based carrier still operating has gone through one or more rounds of restructuring under creditor protection plus all the air carriers that have simply folded-up or merged as an alternative to liquidation is good evidence of that strategy. Westjet and Southwest are counter-examples but aren't exactly blue-chip either and are subject to volatility and risk.
